Boston Red Sox Put RHP Tim Wakefield on DL, Promote RHP Charlie Zink from Pawtucket Red Sox

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today placed righthanded pitcher Tim Wakefield on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 7, with tightness in the back of his right shoulder.To replace Wakefield on the active roster, the Red Sox have purchased the contract of righthanded pitcher Charlie Zink from Triple-A Pawtucket of the International League. Zink, who will wear #51, will make his major league debut when he starts on Tuesday night versus Texas at Fenway Park.
The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.
Zink, 28, is 13-4, 2.89 in 25 starts with the PawSox in 2008. The knuckleballer leads the International League in innings (152.1), is tied for 1st in wins, and has the 3rd lowest era. He is in his 7th season with the Boston organization after being signed as a free agent in April 2002. Zink will be the 9th pitcher to start for Boston in 2008.
Wakefield felt discomfort in his shoulder during his last start on August 6 at Kansas City. He is 7-8, 3.67 in 23 starts with the Red Sox in 2008.
