Spokane Shock Add QB Erik Meyer to Roster

December 23, 2009 – Spokane, WA: The Spokane Shock announced today that QB Erik Meyer has been added to the 2010 roster.

Meyer, 6-2 210, rewrote the record book at Eastern Washington University and was recently named as the top QB in the program’s 100-year history.

As an Eagle, Meyer threw for 10, 261 yards and 84 touchdowns with only 17 interceptions in 42 games. Meyer was selected as the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year after both his junior and senior seasons.  As a senior in 2005, Meyer won the prestigious Walter Payton Award, the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy for FCS programs.

Since that time, Meyer has gained experience in the NFL, NFL Europe, and most recently with the CFL.

“Erik put up some unbelievable numbers in his collegiate career, no doubt about it.” Head Coach Rob Keefe said. “I’m really excited that he is going to come into camp with us. He has proven himself in the outdoor game and now he will have an opportunity to prove himself in the Arena game.”

After his collegiate career, Meyer signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2006. After being released towards the end of training camp with the Bengals, Meyer signed with the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe. As a Centurion, Meyer helped lead the team to a 6-4 record while passing for 1,604 yards with 13 passing touchdowns. His 68.6 percent completion percentage set a new NFL Europe record, breaking the mark previously set by Jake Delhomme.

In 2007 and 2008, Meyer signed with the Seattle Seahawks and the Oakland Raiders respectively, but was released towards the end of training camp from both teams.

“I know that I’m going to find a way to get back to the NFL someday,” Meyer explained. “And it starts with signing with the Shock and leading them to a Championship. I’m confident in myself and my abilities. I’m a competitor and I think that competition brings out the best in me and I’m excited and for the challenge.”
