Beau Torbert and Kris Regas Named to Baseball America's All-Independent Second Team

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -SIOUX FALLS, SD – Two weeks after Sioux Falls Canaries outfielder Beau Torbert and closer Kris Regas were signed by the Detroit Tigers, the duo has added to their long list of accolades for the 2008 season. Both Torbert and Regas were named to Baseball“Beau and Kris were
two standout players not just on our team, but in our league as a whole,” said
Canaries Manager Steve Shirley. “Their
national recognition is certainly deserved given their outstanding contributions
to our ballclub.”
Torbert was named the
2008 American Association Player of the Year following a vote of league managers
and media members. Before scoring the
American Association championship-clinching run in the Canaries 5-4, 12-inning,
win over the Grand Prairie AirHogs on September 5, Beau finished in the top five
in the league in all three triple-crown categories. Torbert was fifth in the league with a .324
batting average, tied for third in the league with 19 home runs, and tied for
third in the league with 71 RBI. Torbert
also led the league with a .568 batting average and led the Canaries with nine
playoff hits.
Regas set a new
short-season independent baseball record with 30 saves in a regular season that
saw him go 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in 41 games.
Kris added four more saves in the playoffs while pitching 7.1 shutout
innings. Regas struck out 72 batters and
walked only eight in 42.0 innings pitched last year. In July, Regas was selected to represent the
Canaries for a second consecutive season at the American
Association All-Star Game. The following month, Regas earned the honor
of American
Association Pitcher of the
Month.
Torbert and Regas
were two of four American
Association players to make
Baseball America ’s All-Independent
Baseball Team.

Joel Kirsten was selected to the Second Team.
