Beau Torbert and Kris Regas Named to Baseball America's All-Independent Second Team

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com -

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -SIOUX FALLS, SD  – Two weeks after Sioux Falls Canaries outfielder Beau Torbert and closer Kris Regas were signed by the Detroit Tigers, the duo has added to their long list of accolades for the 2008 season.  Both Torbert and Regas were named to Baseball America’s All-Independent Second Team.

“Beau and Kris were two standout players not just on our team, but in our league as a whole,” said Canaries Manager Steve Shirley.  “Their national recognition is certainly deserved given their outstanding contributions to our ballclub.”

Torbert was named the 2008 American Association Player of the Year following a vote of league managers and media members.  Before scoring the American Association championship-clinching run in the Canaries 5-4, 12-inning, win over the Grand Prairie AirHogs on September 5, Beau finished in the top five in the league in all three triple-crown categories.  Torbert was fifth in the league with a .324 batting average, tied for third in the league with 19 home runs, and tied for third in the league with 71 RBI.  Torbert also led the league with a .568 batting average and led the Canaries with nine playoff hits.

Regas set a new short-season independent baseball record with 30 saves in a regular season that saw him go 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in 41 games.  Kris added four more saves in the playoffs while pitching 7.1 shutout innings.  Regas struck out 72 batters and walked only eight in 42.0 innings pitched last year.  In July, Regas was selected to represent the Canaries for a second consecutive season at the American Association All-Star Game.  The following month, Regas earned the honor of American Association Pitcher of the Month.

Torbert and Regas were two of four American Association players to make Baseball America’s All-Independent Baseball Team.  Sioux City right-handed pitcher Nick Singleton was selected to the First Team and Fort Worth left-handed pitcher Joel Kirsten was selected to the Second Team.
