SIOUX CITY, IA -- Sioux City native Dustin Jones continues to swing a hot bat for his hometown Explorers, going 4 for 4 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored leading the X's to a 7-2 win over Sioux Falls at Lewis & Clark Park on Friday night.Jones, appropriately, started the scoring with a leadoff double in the bottom of the first off of Sioux Falls starter Benjamin Moore (6-6) and then scored on a RBI triple by Jason Tuttle. Tuttle would score on a RBI grounder by Alex Llanos to make it 2-0.
The Canaries would tie the game off of X's starter Nick Singleton in the 5th on a RBI grounder by Tim Hutting and a sac fly by Alex Bardeguez.
However, 5 unanswered runs would lead the Explorers to their 5th win in a row with 3 in the bottom of the 5th. A leadoff single by Nick McCoola started the rally and the X's 2B moved to 2nd on a bunt from Derek Schermerhorn. Jones would score McCoola on a RBI double to give the X's a 3-2 lead. After Tuttle walked and Llanos bounced out, Chris Grossman drove in 2 runs with a single to center and Sioux City had built a 5-2 lead. The X's added 1 more run in the 6th on a RBI hit by Jones and 1 more run in the 8th on a RBI double by Schermerhorn.
Singleton, meanwhile, had another workmanlike effort for the Explorers, improving to 6-4, going 7 innings, allowing 2 ER on 4 hits, walking 1 and striking out 5. Ty Marotz and Matt Kretzschmar both worked 1-2-3 8th and 9th innings respectively.
Jones was the offensive hero with his 4 hit night. Grossman went 2-5 with 2 RBI. McCoola went 2-3 with 2 runs. Tuttle went 1-4 with a walk and 2 runs scored.
The X's will go for the 4 game sweep against Sioux Falls on Saturday night and Paige Dumont (4-3, 3.27) will take the mound for Sioux City while the Canaries will try to break a season long 5 game losing streak with Ryan Ford (9-4, 2.86) on the hill. Game time is 7:05 with tickets available by calling 277-WINS.
