The St. Paul Saints survived a great pitcher’s duel and salvaged a victory on the road to improve to 13-12 in the second half. Neither team managed an extra base hit or a base on balls in the contest with Saints starter Mark Romanczuk collecting his third win. Romanczuk allowed just three hits while fanning eight in eight scoreless innings before handing things over to reliever Mike Bille, who went on to notch his first save. Sioux Falls starter Pat Mahomes pitched great as well, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out seven in a complete game effort, but suffered the tough-luck loss.

Having built a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth inning, the Cats saw the lead vanish as the Sports plated five runs to move ahead 6-3. But Fort Worth answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to narrow the gap to 6-5 and scored a run each in the seventh and eighth to win by a run. Cats 2B Jake Gautreau and DH John Allen each homered to lead the way at the plate. Fort Worth reliever Kyle Yates retired the only batter he faced in the eighth inning to notch his first win.

The victory runs Gardner’s mark to 9-3 on the season and keeps Lincoln 1.5 games out in front in the North Division standings. Saltdogs CF Matt Maloney led the way offensively.
