Sussex Skyhawks Defeat the Worcester Tornadoes Despite Three Errors, 11 LOB

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – Augusta, NJ -- The Tornadoes failed to capitalize on seven walks and three more Sussex errors, leaving 11 men on base and falling to the Skyhawks, 4-2, at Skylands Park on Tuesday night.

The game began as a great pitchers duel between righty Shaun McNamara (2-8) and Sussex righthander Matt Salvato (7-3), as both pitchers worked out of jams and the contest was scoreless into the bottom of the 4th inning.  McNamara retired the first two batters quickly, but ran into trouble with two outs.  Matt Weston began the Sussex rally by tripling off the top of the right-centerfield wall and Chris Brown followed with an RBI single to leftfield.  Brown moved to second base when leftfielder Mike MacMillan let the ball get by him for an error, and scored on a seeing-eye single to rightfield by Jay Yaconetti.  When Scott Grimes' throw home skipped past Alex Trezza, Yaconetti took second base and scored on Yohanny Valera's RBI single for a 3-0 Skyhawks lead.  The Tornadoes were able to chip away with single runs in the 5th and 7th innings, but could get no closer.  Sussex tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th off the Worcester bullpen for the final tally.

Salvato (7-3) went 6.1 innings and allowed just two runs (one earned) for the Win.  McNamara (2-8) pitched well, allowing just three runs (two earned) but suffered the Loss.  Matt Petrusek pitched a scoreless 9th inning for his 13th Save of the season.   The Tornadoes stranded 11 men on base, including at least one in every inning but the 6th.  Worcester had at least one man on base in every inning, but managed just five hits on the night and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.  The Tornadoes will try to get back on track on Wednesday night when they send righty Junior Guerrero to the mound against Sussex righthander Gary Galvez.  First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
