Monday, September 22, 2008 at 07:32AM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -NEWARK, NJ – In the final game of the 2008 season, the Newark Bears hit four
home runs, including two by Keith Reed, but the derby was not enough to defeat
the Somerset Patriots, and they fell 14-8 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront
Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Mike Just got the Bears started with the
team’s first inside the park home run of the season. Patriots center fielder
Elliott Ayala misjudged the ball, which sailed over his head and rolled to the
centerfield wall, allowing Just to speed around the bases. Reed then
immediately followed with his first homer of the game. Jose Herrera contributed
a two-run shot in the third. Reed homered again in the fifth, ending the season
leading the team with 25 homers.
The Patriots banged out nine runs in
the first two innings, creating an insurmountable lead en route to the victory.
A three-run home run by Matt Hagen gave the team a 3-0 lead in the first inning,
and then the Patriots scattered seven hits, including a three-run homer by
Brandon Larson, and scored six runs in the second to take a 9-2 advantage. The
team added two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, and two in the ninth.
Elliott Ayala was 4-6 and homered twice – solo shots in the seventh and ninth –
while Teuris Olivares also went 4-6, scoring every time he reached
base.
Patriots starter Brian Tollberg (2-0) lasted five innings, giving
up five runs on seven his, to earn the win. Carlos Mirabal (3-2) suffered the
loss, giving up nine runs and eleven hits through three innings.
