Newark Bears Have Three Players Named to Atlantic League All-Star Team

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com -

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - NEWARK , NJ – Three players from the Newark Bears have been named to the Atlantic League All-Star team for the 2008 season. This marks the first time outfielders Jose Herrera and Keith Reed have received this honor, while shortstop Ramon Castro makes a repeat appearance, having also been named in 2007.

In his fourth season with the team, Herrera finished the season batting .331 with 93 RBI and set five Bears career records along the way, including hits (482), doubles (78), and RBI (259). Reed also had 93 RBI on the season, led the Bears with 26 home runs, and was tied for the league lead in extra-base hits with 65. Castro finished the season with the second-best batting average in the Atlantic League, hitting .352. His two-home run performance in the league’s All-Star game in July earned him Most Valuable Player honors.

“Ramon, Keith, and Jose are all supremely talented players, who had terrific 2008 seasons, and are very deserving of being selected as Atlantic League All Stars,” said Jim Cerny, the Bears’ Assistant General Manager of Baseball Operations. “We are very proud of each of these players, and appreciate all of their efforts in helping make 2008 such an exciting season for the Newark Bears.”
