Somerset Patriots Take 2-1 Lead Over Camden Riversharks in Atlantic League Championship Series

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots defeated the Camden Riversharks 14-4 at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Sunday night to take a 2-1 lead in the Atlantic League Championship Series.

 
The Riversharks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Shortstop David Espinosa doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Shaun Boyd.
 

The Patriots answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead. Center fielder Sean Smith doubled and later scored on an RBI groundout by first baseman Josh Pressley. Third baseman Brandon Larson followed with a solo home run (3) to center for a 2-1 lead.
 
After over a two and a half hour rain delay, Camden took the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Second baseman Gabe Suarez walked, was sacrificed to second, and advanced to third on an error that allowed Espinosa to reach. Suarez scored on an RBI groundout by Boyd and center fielder L.J. Biernbaum followed with an RBI single to plate Espinosa.
 
The Patriots broke open the game with a six-run fifth inning. Shortstop Anthony Granato walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an RBI single by second baseman Teuris Olivares. After Pressley drew a walk, Larson hit an RBI double to score Olivares. Belcher plated Pressley with an RBI double, and after left fielder Matt Hagen was intentionally walked to load the bases, pinch hitter Mike Lockwood hit a two-run single up the middle. Catcher Travis Anderson drove home Hagen with a sacrifice bunt for an 8-3 advantage.
 
Somerset continued to roll with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Smith was hit by a pitch, Olivares singled, and Pressley followed with a three run home run (1).  Larson and Belcher each singled, and Lockwood drove home Larson on a sacrifice fly.  Belcher would later score on a wild pitch to make the score 14-3.
 
Camden scored a run in the top of the seventh. Biernbaum doubled and scored on an RBI single by designated hitter Ron Davenport.
 
Patriots reliever Casey Cahill (1-0) picked up the win allowing one hit in 0.2 innings pitched.  Camden reliever Federico Baez (0-1) suffered the loss allowing four earned runs on four hits in 1.1 innings pitched.  Steve Kelly earned his first save of the post season by pitching three innings.
 
The 2008 Atlantic League Championship Series will continue at Commerce Bank Ballpark with Game 4 on Monday night at 7:05 pm.
