Grand Prairie, TX. The Grand Prairie AirHogs use timely hitting and smart base running to top the El Paso Diablos 5-3. The team used only five hits to put together five runs. For most of the game, they trailed in the hit column but never in runs.
"We played a solid game," Manager Pete Incaviglia said. "We had good defense and hit when we needed it. Overall it was a functional ball game."
Only once did a runner not reach base, and through the fifth, every two out situation was extended with either a walk or a hit. Chad Gabriel took those honors twice in consecutive innings. Once in the second with a double off the chalk in left in which he eventually scored on an error from the right fielder, and later on a walk in the third.
The second was the big inning for the AirHogs. After Gabriel's walk, Drew Holder got hit by a Justin Mallett fastball, then three consecutive walks from Aaron Garza, Brandon Carter and Cesar Nicolas made it 3-0.
Despite the good defense, Jordan Tata struggled to finish hitters off. He gave up his second double and third walk in the third before the bullpen mentor, Pat Mahomes, visited the mound. Three pitches later El Paso executed a double steal and three more pitches yielded a two-run single from Jorge Alvarez to cut the lead to one. Alvarez was caught in a rundown as he rounded first, which seemed to calm down Tata as he got the next two batters to meagerly fly out to finish off his night. He went three innings and allowed two runs on three hits, walking three and striking out four in his first start of the year.
Crowell, Luke Prihoda and James Morrison teamed up with Tata to strike out the Diablo hitters 11 times. Incaviglia said "....defense is the team's strength and when it matches up with the hitting it can turn out to be a fun night."
The sixth inning might be exactly what he was talking about. Noel Trevino singled on the first pitch of the inning, stole second and advanced to third on a high throw. Garza walked just before Brandon Carter laid one in right to take the lead 4-3. After a pitching change, Garza advanced on another bad throw down to second, but the offense left Carter standing on third.
Prihoda claimed the only 1-2-3 inning for Grand Prairie in the seventh and had an effective eight as he set up the save for Morrison.
El Paso got the winning run to the plate but J.B. Tucker took a foul ball off the net behind home plate to seal the win.
Grand Prairie climbs to one game behind .500 as they play the Diablos Wednesday night again at QuikTrip Park for the third of a four-game series.
