Gateway Grizzlies Defeat Evansville Otters - Frontier League

SAUGET, IL-Nate Melek tossed his first complete game of the year Saturday night, guiding the Gateway Grizzlies to a 10-5 win over the Evansville Otters in front of 4,965 at GCS Ballpark.  The win snaps a season-high five game losing streak for the Grizzlies.

Melek allowed just two earned runs, and struck out a season-high 10 hitters in the win.

Evansville (10-24) committed five errors Friday night, which led to six unearned run for the Grizzlies (12-21).

The Grizzlies wasted little time in getting on the board, scoring a first inning run on an RBI hit by Charlie Lisk to make it 1-0.  The Grizzlies extended the lead to 4-0 in the second thanks to three unearned runs.  Jareck West drove in a run with double in the inning.  Brandon Johnson made it 7-0 Grizzlies in the third with his second home run of the year, a three-run shot to right.

Tyler Diamond hit his first home run as a professional in the sixth inning to get the Otters on the board.  Diamond’s homer, a three-run shot, followed a two-out Grizzlies error.

The Grizzlies pushed three more runs across in the eighth, again thanks to an error.  Joseph Scaperotta singled to drive in two to cap the scoring.  Scaperotta’s hit, which came in his last at-bat, was his only hit of the night, and extended his hitting streak to 16 games.  He finished 1-5.

The Grizzlies and the Otters continue the series with a 6:05 game Sunday evening at GCS Ballpark.
