CALGARY, AB – Calgary Roughnecks President and General Manager Brad Banister announced today that the club has signed transition player Rob Van Beek to a three-year deal. Terms of the deal were not disclosed and are subject to league approval.
“Signing a three year deal shows his commitment to the team,” said Banister.
Van Beek, a native of Port Couquitlam, BC, played for the Philadelphia Wings for the last five years, putting up 14 points, including four goals and 10 assists in 16 games last season. In that time, the 26-year-old transition player also collected 83 loose balls and 11 penalty minutes.
Van Beek was originally drafted by the Wings in the first round (5th overall) in the 2004 NLL Entry Draft. The Roughnecks snagged him from the Philadelphia Wings in October of 2009 in exchange for Calgary’s second round pick in the 2010 NLL Entry Draft.
In 72 career regular season games, Van Beek has notched 22 goals and 59 assists for 81 points. In that time, he has also collected 390 loose balls and racked up 180 penalty minutes.
“He brings a lot of speed and aggression to back up our left-handed transition game,” added Banister.
In other signings, the Roughnecks have signed netminder Chris Levis to a one-year deal. The native of Windsor, ON spent the 2009 season with the Edmonton Rush putting up a 11.17 GAA and a 77 save percentage.
The Calgary Roughnecks kick-off the 2010 season on Sunday, Jan. 10th at the Pengrowth Saddledome against the Minnesota Swarm.
