INDIANAPOLIS -- Catcher
Cole Armstrong crushed a two-run homer in the top of the 10th and
Charlotte hung on for a 6-3 win over Indianapolis in front of 10,020
Monday night at Victory Field.
The Knights improve to 49-54 overall and 23-30 on the road, while the Indians fall to 47-56 on the season and 24-28 at home.
Armstrong’s first Triple-A homer of the year cleared the wall in right
center and came after 1B Royce Huffman drew a lead-off walk. Charlotte
added an insurance run moments later when SS Fernando Cortez roped a
base knock to center, stole second and came plateward on CF Jason
Bourgeois’ bloop to center.
Knights RHP Jason Childers (2.0
IP, 1 BB, 3 SO) improved to 4-1 with the win, while Indians RHP Matt
Miller (2.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) fell to 4-7 with the loss.
Neither starter -- Charlotte RHP Carlos Torres (4.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER,
0 BB, 2 SO) or Indianapolis RHP Ty Taubenheim (1.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER,
2 BB, 1 SO) -- figured in the decision.
The Knights jumped out
to a 3-0 advantage with one run in the first and two more in the
second. Bourgeois singled to center and eventually scored on LF Chris
Getz’s double to right in the first. 2B Danny Richar then clobbered a
two-run homer to right after Bourgeois beat out a bunt single in the
second.
The Indians evened things with two runs in the fourth
and one in the fifth. DH Adam Boeve ripped a two-run double to plate
3B Neil Walker and 1B Steve Pearce in the fourth, while LF Nyjer Morgan
singled to left and eventually trotted to the dish on Walker’s base
knock in the fifth.
Bourgeois (4-for-6, 2 R, 1 RBI) matched a
season high with four base knocks, while Walker (2-for-5, 1 R) and C
Michel Hernandez (2-for-4) collected multi-hit performances for the
Tribe.
The teams continue their four-game series on Tuesday at
7 p.m. RHP Jack Egbert is slated to start for Charlotte, while RHP
Jason Davis is expected to get the nod for Indianapolis.
