MIdland RockHounds Have No Mercy on Corpus Christi Hooks in 11-0 Thrashing

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com –

CORPUS CHRISTI – Vince Mazzaro tossed a five-hitter through seven innings and Midland clubbed four home runs as the RockHounds handled Corpus Christi 11-0 Friday night before 6,776 at Whataburger Field.

The Hooks, 12-21 in the second half and 42-61 overall, were shut out for the 12th time this season.

Corpus Christi had hits in five of the first six innings, but only three runners reached scoring position.

The Hounds broke through for four runs against Hooks starter Casey Hudspeth in the third.  Justin Sellers laced a leadoff triple past a diving Eli Iorg in center field and rode home on Jed Morris’ double to right.  Two outs later, Jon Zeringue notched his 17th blast of the season, a three-run shot beyond the berm in left.

Midland tacked on three more in the sixth when Michael Affronti launched a three-run homer that just cleared the yellow stripe on the left-field fence for a 7-0 advantage.

Hudspeth was charged with seven runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings.  The right-hander walked one and struck out four.

Mazzaro, the Texas League leader in victories and ERA, is now 5-0 against the Hooks this season, holding Corpus Christi to four earned runs over 41 1/3 innings (0.88 ERA).  He tossed 101 pitches, recording one walk and five strikeouts.

Sean Doolittle added on in the seventh with a tape-measure two-run homer off the batter’s eye in center.  Tommy Everidge crunched his 18th homer of the year to open the ninth and give Midland a 10-0 edge.

Drew Sutton, who has now hit safely in 17 of his last 19 games, was the Hooks’ offensive leader with two singles and two walks in four trips to the plate.

The series continues Saturday night when lefties Josh Outman (0-0) and Polin Trinidad (3-4) meet in a 7:05 tilt.
