Portland Beavers Blank the Memphis Redbirds 3-0 to Earn Series Split

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com –

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Josh Geer gave up two hits over seven strong innings and Kevin Cameron pitched the final two frames to close out a combined, four-hit shutout as the Portland Beavers earned a split in their four-game series with the Memphis Redbirds Friday night with a 3-0 victory at AutoZone Park.

Peter Ciofrone, who was 2-for-5 with an RBI, extended his hitting streak to 22 games with a seventh-inning single, and Paul McAnulty was 2-for-4 with a run driven in and one run scored for the Beavers, who have won eight of their last 11 games.

For Geer, it was his first win since June 8 after taking seven no-decisions and one loss over his previous eight starts. Geer (6-7) struck out four and issued one walk while facing just three batters over the minimum in his time on the hill.

Cameron, with the Beavers (55-49) on a major league rehab assignment, notched his first save with the club by limiting Memphis to two hits and a walk over his two scoreless frames.

The loss went to Chris Carpenter, who worked 5 2/3 innings in a major league rehab start for the Redbirds (58-48). The 2005 Cy Young Award winner struck out five and gave up two runs and four hits.

Ciofrone, who has the longest active hitting streak in the league and the longest in eight seasons for the Beavers, added to a 2-0 lead with an RBI single in the ninth.

The Beavers struck for a run in the second as McAnulty reached on a leadoff single and later scored on an RBI groundout by Colt Morton. Will Venable doubled with one out and came around to make it 2-0 on McAnulty’s single to right field in the third.

The Beavers travel to Nashville overnight and will begin a four-game series there Saturday night at 4 p.m. (Pacific).

NOTES: The Beavers haven’t lost a series in Memphis since 2004 … the Beavers are 4-4 in shutout games this season … there was just one home run hit in the series – a three-run clout by McAnulty in Tuesday’s series-opener … newly acquired pitcher Chad Reineke gets the start for his Portland debut Saturday night at Nashville … McAnulty has hit safely in nine of his 13 games since joining the Beavers from San Diego.
