Monday, July 28, 2008 at 10:53AM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com – HAGERSTOWN, MD–The Hagerstown Suns (17-19) got off
on the wrong foot against the Greensboro Grasshoppers (14-22) on Sunday and
never recovered, losing 8-1 at Municipal Stadium.
The Grasshoppers got to Suns starter Colton Willems
(5-8) as a two-out walk to Hunter Mense was followed by a double by Mike Stanton
to score one run and an RBI single Matt Dominguez to drive in
Stanton.
Hagerstown cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning, but had a great opportunity to score even more as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Catcher Travis Reagan and second baseman Valerio Heredia led off the inning with singles before centerfielder Mark Gildea was hit by a pitch. Jose Lozada then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Reagan from third base. span class="full-image-float-right">
However, the Suns did not manage any more runs in
the inning as the next two batters grounded out and struck out to end the
inning.
Greensboro continued their offensive onslaught in
the top of the fourth with two more runs including a solo home run by Mense off
Willems.
After allowing the leadoff hitter to reach in the
top of the fifth, Willems was replaced by Ryan Harrison. In the end, Willems
took the loss, allowing five earned runs in just four innings of
work.
Harrison was more effective, after allowing the
runner he inherited in the fifth to score, the righthander gave up just one more
run in three innings of work.
The final two runs for Greensboro came in the ninth
inning as Stanton hit his league-leading 24th home run off reliever
Justin Phillabaum to put the game out of reach.
Five Greensboro pitchers combined to allow ten hits, all singles, and just one run to the Suns. Jay Voss picked up the win with two shut-out innings of relief.
