Erie SeaWolves Take 10 Innings to Defeat the Akron Aeros in 4-3 Win

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – AKRON, OH – Wes Hodges tied the game in the eighth inning with a solo home run but Dusty Ryan’s blast in the top of the 10th inning lifted Erie to a 4-3 win before 2,606 fans at Canal Park Wednesday night. The Aeros fell to 66-45, while Erie improved to 48-64.

Erie got on the board first with an unearned run in the first inning. Casper Wells reached on a throwing error by Wes Hodges, and consecutive singles by Jeff Frazier and Ryan Roberson scored Wells to make it 1-0.

The Aeros tied the game in the second inning when Wyatt Toregas singled and Brandon Pinckney doubled to put runners on second and third with two down. Jose Constanza followed by laying down a perfect bunt past the pitcher’s mound with the infield playing back. Third baseman Santo de Leon bare-handed the ball but could not throw out Constanza blazing down the line as Toregas scored the tying run.

Bronson Sardinha gave the Aeros a 2-1 lead in the third inning with a lead-off home run deep into the Erie bullpen in right field.

That lead would hold until the eighth inning, when the SeaWolves put up a pair of runs to re-take the lead. Wilkin Ramirez led off with a double and Frazier singled to put runners at the corners. Ryan Roberson then stroked a sacrifice fly to right, plating Ramirez, who slid just past the tag of Toregas after Stephen Head’s throw reached the plate on the fly. Then with two outs, Deik Scram singled to put runners on first and third and de Leon followed with an RBI rip to right. Shawn Roof then hit a dying fly ball down the right-field line, but Head made a great sliding catch to save a run and end the frame.

Hodges, though, tied the game at 3-3, leading off the bottom of the eighth with a solo blast deep into the trees beyond the left-field fence.

The game remained tied into the 10th inning, but with one out in the top half, Ryan launched a solo home run that just cleared the fence in left off Aeros reliever Erik Stiller, giving Erie a 4-3 lead. Hodges walked with one out in the bottom of the tenth, but the Aeros could not scratch out a run to tie the game.

Danny Zell (4-2) earned the win for Erie, pitching a perfect inning of relief to end the ninth and start the tenth before giving way to Brendan Wise who picked up his second save. Stiller (6-4) took the loss after surrendering the home run to Ryan in the 10th. Akron starter Scott Lewis was terrific, working six innings and allowing just one run (none earned) on five hits with one walk and a season-high eight strikeouts. Hodges, Ryan Goleski, and Pinckney all had two hits apiece for the Aeros.
