Colorado Springs Sky Sox Wallop the Portland Beavers in 14-4 Victory

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Chris Frey delivered a three-run homer that highlighted an eight-run third inning, and the Colorado Springs Sky Sox collected 19 hits on their way to a 14-4 victory over the Portland Beavers Saturday night at Security Service Field.

Doug Bernier, Humberto Cota and Kenny Perez each tallied three hits apiece, while four others logged two hits for the Sky Sox, who have won five in a row.

Starter Sean Smith (5-4) worked five innings and allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three to get the win.

Peter Ciofrone hit safely in his 24th consecutive road game and Paul McAnulty hit his seventh home run in his last 12 games for the Beavers, who have lost seven of their last 10 contests.

The Beavers (61-57) took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the third, but Colorado Springs sent 11 batters to the plate during an eight-run rally that left them with a commanding 9-2 advantage.

Later, the Sky Sox (59-61) answered McAnutly’s two-run, fifth-inning homer with two runs in the seventh and further padded their lead in the eighth when pinch-hitter Sean Barker tacked on a three-run double.

Brett Tomko made a major league rehab start for the Beavers, tossing one inning, but Josh Geer (7-8) suffered the bulk of the damage, allowing eight runs on a season-high 12 hits over five innings after taking over in the second.

The Beavers and Sky Sox will duel in a doubleheader consisting of two, seven-inning games beginning at 12:05 p.m. (Pacific) on Sunday.

NOTES: Before the game, catcher Luke Carlin was recalled by San Diego and the Beavers added right-handed pitcher Tyler Davis and catcher Clinton Naylor from Class A Eugene … Smith helped his cause with a triple in the game … the Beavers are 16-22 in games decided by five or more runs this season.
