Jeff Mandel Hurls Gem in Potomac Nationals 6-0 Blanking of Kinston Indians

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com -

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - KINSTON, N.C..— Right-hander Jeff Mandel pitched a career-long 7 2/3
innings and helped the Potomac Nationals shutout the Kinston Indians 6-0
to complete a three-game sweep of the K-Tribe.

The 23-year-old was brilliant in his time on the mound, allowing only four
hits while striking out four and walking only one. Kinston never had
multiple runners on base during his outing and never had one reach past
second base all night.

The offense was powered mainly by Dee Brown who homered twice in the
contest, a solo shot leading off the fourth and then a two-run blast in
the top of the eight. It was the first time since August 14, 2006, when
Brown went deep twice against the Winston-Salem Warthogs that he
accomplished the feat in the same game.

Francisco Plasencia got the scoring started for the P-Nats with a RBI
double to left in the first inning scoring Dan Lyons giving the club a 1-0
lead.

Lyons added to a 2-0 lead in the top of the as he blooped a double in
front of center fielder Roman Pena plating Aaron Seuss with a 3-0
advantage.

In his last chance to extend his hit streak to a career-long nine games,
Boomer Whiting singled into left field in the top of the ninth, scoring
Pat Nichols who doubled in front of him and completing the scoring at 6-0.

Shawn Nottingham (2-4) took the tough-luck loss after allowing three runs
on five hits in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked only one.

Mandel improved to 6-4 with the win and lowered his ERA from 4.34 to 3.94
in the process.

Potomac matched the 1984 Prince William Pirates for second place on the
all-time wins list and lowered its magic number to clinch the second half
Northern Division title to just seven.

The P-Nats will be off on Thursday and begin a three-game series and
seven-game homestand, the last of the regular season, against the
Lynchburg Hillcats on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
