CHRISTI – Casey Hudspeth struck out six and
lasted seven innings, while Drew Sutton went 3-for-4, including a home run to
lead off the home first as Corpus Christi snapped its six-game losing streak
with a 5-4 victory over Midland before 6,936 fans Wednesday night at Whataburger
Field.
The Hooks, 20-38
in the second half, scored three times in the first two frames. RockHound
starter Jason Fernandez (0-2) surrendered Sutton’s 18th home run of
the season, a no-doubter to left. Brian Bogusevic opened the second with a
single up the middle. One out later, Billy Hart ripped a double to left field,
putting runners at second and third. Jonathan Fixler then recorded his first
Double-A RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field. In the next at-bat, Wladimir
Sutil placed a hit in front of left fielder Richie Robnett, giving the Hooks a
3-0 lead.span class="full-image-float-right">
Midland, now tied
with Frisco for first place in the Texas League South second-half race,
responded with two runs in the third thanks to an RBI double by Myron Leslie and
a run scoring single off the bat of Todd Donovan. Hudspeth (3-4) then retired
the next 12 men he faced before Robnett’s lead-off homer onto the berm in
left. Hudspeth held the RockHounds, who racked up 26 runs in the first two
games, to three tallies and seven hits. The right-hander did not walk a
batter.
Tip Fairchild
provided some relief for a beleaguered bullpen, stringing together his first
professional save in two-inning fashion. Midland catcher Anthony Recker hit a
round-tripper off Fairchild with two away in the ninth, pulling the ’Hounds
within a run. After allowing a single to Justin Sellers, Fairchild induced a
deep fly-out from Leslie to end the game.
Jonny Ash’s
sacrifice fly in the fifth provided the Hooks with their fourth run and Sutton’s
RBI single to right in the seventh capped the scoring for Corpus
