Hagerstown Suns Score 12 Runs in Fifth Inning to Defeat Delmarva Shorebirds 13-9 - South Atlantic League

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com – HAGERSTOWN, MD – The Hagerstown Suns (22-37) used a twelve run fifth inning to take down the Delmarva Shorebirds (33-25) 13-9.  The win ends a seven game losing skid for the Suns.

After a pitcher’s duel on Wednesday night in which the two teams combined to score one run, the bats were out in full force on Thursday.

The Suns started the scoring in the first inning.  Third baseman Valerio Heredia singled to the right side and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt by pitcher Luis Noel (10-8).  First baseman Tim Pahuta brought home Heredia with a single to right field. span class="full-image-float-right">

Delmarva answered with two runs in the third inning and then two more in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.

After a quiet second, third, and fourth innings, Hagerstown exploded for twelve runs in the fifth.  The Suns sent 17 batters to the plate in the inning and every player except Blake Stouffer scored a run.  Four Suns players scored twice in the frame, and only catcher Travis Reagan did come to the plate twice.

A walk to Pahuta with the bases loaded started the scoring off in the fifth inning.  A wild pitch then scored Valerio Heredia and put runners at second and third for right fielder Jesus Valdez.  He brought both runners in with a single to center field.

With two outs in the inning and two runners on Travis Reagan singled home Valdez.  Left fielder Bryan Miller walked in his second trip to the plate in the inning to load the bases for Mark Gildea.  The Suns center fielder then squirted a single through the right side to score two more runs.

Heredia followed that up with a walk and Jose Lozada brought in Gildea with an infield single.  Pahuta then capped off the huge inning with a three run blast to right field, his 15th home run of the year.   When the dust finally settled, the Suns had a 13-4 lead.

Four of the runs in the inning were charged to Noel, who ended up taking the loss for Delmarva.  Reliever Robert Neigebauer got just one out in the inning and gave up five of the runs in the fifth.  Andrew Schindling finished out the fifth and gave up three runs on three hits.

Delmarva did not go down quietly.  The Shorebirds scored three in the sixth and two more in the ninth, but it was not enough.

Brad Meyers (9-6) picked up the victory for the Suns. Terrence Engles worked the final four innings for Hagerstown to earn his first save of the year.

Pahuta finished the game with five RBI and designated hitter Sean Rooney had a perfect 5-for-5 night at the plate.
