Myrtle Beach Pelicans Fall to the Winston-Salem Warthogs 3-2 - Carolina League

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – Winston-Salem - The Pelicans squandered a pair of early chances and never had another as they quietly dropped game one of a three-game set, 3-2, to the Winston-Salem Warthogs Thursday night at Ernie Shore Field.

The Pelicans jumped on top against Hogs' starter Jacob Rasner in the first inning as Gorkys Hernandez led off with a double and scored two batters later on an RBI-single from Ernesto Mejia.  Myrtle Beach had a great opportunity for more with the bases loaded and one out, but Travis Jones grounded into an inning-ending double-play.

Myrtle Beach loaded the bases again in the second inning, this time with nobody out, but settled for a lone run.  Brandon Hicks led off with a single, followed by a Phillip Britton single on a hit-and-run to put runners at the corners.  Jon Mark Owings walked to load the bases, and following Hernandez striking out, Willie Cabrera made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Hicks.  Eric Campbell then popped out to end the threat.

The Warthogs got even all with two outs against birds' starter Cole Rohrbough
in the third.  Sergio Miranda started the uprising with a single and CJ Retherford followed with a single to put two aboard.  Rohrbough then hung a 1-2 breaking ball that was driven off the right field wall by Greg Paiml for a double to tie the game, 2-2.

Rasner settled in admirably following his early struggles and retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced after the second inning to work through the sixth inning.  The right-hander also established a new season-high with nine strike outs in the ballgame.  He received a no-decision, leaving with the game tied, 2-2.

Rohrbough also settled in after his troubles in the third, but an inning-opening error by Hicks in the seventh led to his ultimate departure from the ballgame and the third run for the Hogs.  Ronnie Gaines sent a routine roller to Hicks to open the seventh, but Hicks couldn't handle it cleanly.  Rohrbough then balked Gaines to second and he advanced to third on a fly-out from Brett Bonvechio.  That set the stage for Francisco Hernandez to lay down a successful suicide-squeeze bunt that scored Gaines with the go-ahead run.

Henry Mabee followed Radner and turned in two scoreless innings of relief.  Mabee (3-1) earned the win as the Hogs plated the winning run during his stint.  Rohrbough (1-1) was tagged with the tough-luck loss, his first of the season.

Matt Davis saved the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.  The win pulls Winston-Salem within four games of the Pelicans second half lead.  Myrtle Beach continues with a magic number of seven to claim the second half.

Game two of the series is scheduled at 7 PM on Friday night at Ernie Shore Field.  RHP Ryne Reynoso (10-6, 3.20) will make the start for Myrtle Beach against RHP Matt Long (8-12, 4.59) for Winston-Salem.
