Albuquerque Isotopes Beat New Orleans Zephyrs 7-3 - PCL

Albuquerque - The Albuquerque Isotopes (62-72) mounted a furious ninth-inning comeback, plating five runs to overcome a 7-3 deficit and defeat the New Orleans Zephyrs (62-72) in dramatic fashion 8-7 Friday night at Isotopes Park. Michael Ryan hammered a pinch-hit, two-run homer with two outs to tie the game in the final frame before Robert Andino drove in the winning run with a single, giving the Isotopes their fourth victory in a row and their 12th in 15 games.Trailing 7-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Tagg Bozied sparked the rally by drawing a leadoff walk before advancing to third on a single by Jason Wood. Andrew Beattie then hit into a force at second that erased Wood at second but allowed Bozied to trot home and trim the lead to 7-4. Two batters later, with two down in the inning, Paul Hoover laced a double to right that scored Beattie all the way from first and cut the advantage to 7-5. That brought up Ryan, who took the second pitch he saw and crushed it over the right field fence for a clutch pinch-hit homer, just the third by an Isotope all season, to knot the contest at 7-7. Albuquerque wasn’t quite finished, however, as Dallas McPherson doubled to right-center in front of Andino, who delivered his second walk-off win in six days with a single through the hole at second that chased home McPherson and gave the ‘Topes the dramatic 8-7, come-from-behind triumph.
Albuquerque’s ninth inning lead turned out to be its first of the game, as New Orleans jumped out to a 2-0 edge in the top of the fourth on a two-run blast by Trot Nixon.
Bozied answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the frame that cut the lead in half 2-1. The home run was Bozied’s 25th on the year, establishing a new career high for dingers in a season for the ‘Topes’ fan favorite.
A former Isotope did damage against his former mates in the top of the sixth when, after Nixon drew a leadoff walk, Chris Aguila hit a two-run homer to deep center field to pad the Z’s lead to 4-1.
Still, the never-say-die Isotopes were undaunted, responding with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Wood and Beattie led off the frame with back-to-back singles before Miller added a third base knock to drive home Wood and bring Albuquerque to within 4-2. Hoover added a ground ball to shortstop that plated Beattie and suddenly the Isotopes were within a single run at 4-3.
As exciting as the bottom of the ninth was, the top of the frame was almost equally as bleak, as the Zephyrs nearly broke the game open, turning a one-run lead into a four-run cushion. Michel Abreu starting things off with a pinch-hit solo homer of his own to put New Orleans ahead 5-3 before Andy Green drew a walk, stole a base, and scored on a single by Nixon to make the score 6-3. Nixon would trot into second on a wild pitch, moving into scoring position for another former ‘Tope, Valentino Pascucci, who picked him up with a double that gave the Z’s a 7-3 advantage heading into the game’s eventual frenetic finish.
Reliever Carlos Martinez (1-1) picked up the win for the Isotopes despite giving up the three runs in the ninth, while New Orleans relief pitcher Eddie Kunz (0-1) suffered the demoralizing loss.
Making his first ‘Topes start under the watchful eye of Isotopes pitching coach Rich Gale, right-hander Tim Corcoran turned
in a solid outing, allowing four runs on five hits in six innings while walking three and striking out two en route to the no-decision.
The Isotopes will look to take their fourth straight from the Zephyrs on Saturday behind right-hander Dallas Trahern (4-10, 6.61) who will toe the slab against Z’s righty Nelson Figueroa (4-6, 4.18) in 7:05 PM start from Isotopes Park.
