Astros, grabbed an early six-run lead and held off a Frederick comeback
try to secure a game-one win 10-5 Friday night on Lewis-Gale Medical
Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Eight of the nine spots
in the order for Salem (23-37) scored a run against Frederick (25-36).
The Avalanche plated a pair of runs in the first against Pedro Beato.
After Collin DeLome doubled and Mark Ori walked, Tim Torres stroked a
single to right to plate the first run. Then, Koby Clemens flicked a
sacrifice fly to right to score Ori and make the count 2-0.
Salem then redoubled its effort in the second inning. With Cesar Quintero
on first and one away, Roberto Mena popped a bunt up out of the reach of
both Beato and catcher Justin Johnson. Then, Jhon Florentino dispatched
the first pitch he saw into the right-field corner for an RBI double.
Then, Collin DeLome baashed a ball over the head of center fielder Chris
Amador for, ultimately, a two-run triple. The following batter, Ori,
floated a sacrifice fly to center to score DeLome and give the Avs a 6-0
lead.
The Keys then plated a run in the sixth and blitzed the Avs in the
seventh. Five straight hits, the final three of which went for RBI,
combined to provide a four-run effort. That sliced the lead to one.
The Avs, though, answered with a four-run frame of their own. Koby
Clemens began the score as the third in a string of three consecutive
singles. His base-hit to left scored Ori. After a Nick Moresi walk, and
a Cesar Quintero groundout, pinch-hitter Jordan Parraz was hit by a pitch
to score Clemens and expand the lead to three. The next hitter, Roberto
Mena, bounced a ball to third that Billy Rowell threw home for an out.
Johnson, though, whistled the ball over the first baseman Vinyard’s head.
The error scored Quintero and kept the inning alive. Immediately
following, Jhon Florentino singled to right to bring Parraz home and
finish the scoring.
The Avs got five scoreless innings from Chad Wagler to open his outing.
He finished with four runs charged to him and a victory to his credit.
Offensively, four players posted two hits for the Avalanche including
Florentino. The third baseman has notched at least a pair of hits in nine
of his last 12.
