SC – The Augusta GreenJackets (41-28, 40-21) lost their second straight
road game in their series opener to the Greenville Drive (40-30, 27-34)
2-1 on Saturday. Augusta out hit the Drive 10-2 and starter Scott Barnes struck out 14 but was still saddled with the loss.
The Drive scored both their runs in the first inning with neither coming on a hit. David
Mailman led off the inning reaching on an error form shortstop Juan
Ciriaco then Rafael Cabreja followed with a double to put runners on
second and third.
Zach
Penprase followed with an RBI ground out and then after Jared Stanley
walked Oscar Tejeda reached on an RBI fielder’s choice.
Barnes
(2-2) went on to strike out eight straight batters and retire 17 in a
row while setting a GreenJackets season high strikeout total with 14.
Augusta got its one run in the third inning on an RBI single from Ciriaco with a bases loaded single to left-field. On play Shane Jordan was waved home and was thrown out by Stanley in left-field for the second out.
The GreenJackets left eight on base and five in scoring position.
Mitch Lively retired the first two batters he faced in relief to push the streak to 19 straight Drive batters retired. Lively worked two shutout innings allowing one hit, a walk and three strikeouts.
The GreenJackets and Drive continue their series Sunday with Augusta sending left-hander Craig Clark (7-4, 3.76) to the mound. Greenville will counter with right-hander Chad Povich (8-5, 3.61). First pitch is at 4:00 p.m.
