Erie SeaWolves Continue Streak with 4-1 Win Over the Connecticut Defenders

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – The SeaWolves won their fourth consecutive game as they took down the Connecticut Defenders on Saturday night at Dodd Stadium by a score of 4-1. The win gives Erie their first season series victory over the Defenders since 2004.

Connecticut struck first in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Luis Marte. Kyle Haines and Antoan Richardson connected on back-to-back singles to start the inning. A 5-4-3 double play put Haines on third with two outs for Eliezer Alfonzo. Alfonzo singled to right, scoring Haines for a 1-0 Defenders lead.

The SeaWolves responded in the top of the second against Connecticut starter Adam Cowart. Ryan Roberson led off with a walk and Deik Scram singled to put runners on first and second. Jeff Frazier grounded into a fielder’s choice putting runners on the corners with one out for Santo De Leon. De Leon singled home Roberson, tying the game at 1-1.

Erie would take the lead for good in the top of the third inning. Skelton drew a one-out walk and Casper Wells came to the plate and crushed his 15th home run of the season to put the ‘Wolves on top 3-1. Wells now has 25 combined home runs with West Michigan and Erie.

The ‘Wolves added another run in the top of the fifth. Will Rhymes led off with his league-lead 155th hit. Skelton singled to put two on base and with one out, Wilkin Ramirez laced a double down the left field line scoring Rhymes, giving the ‘Wolves a 4-1 lead. The three-run advantage would be enough for Marte and the ‘Wolves.

Marte worked seven innings, allowing a run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts as he improved his record to 4-3. Marte is now 4-1 in his last five starts.

Angel Castro ran into trouble with two on base in the eighth and induced a deep fly ball off the bat of Alfonzo for the final out.

In the ninth, Rudy Darrow worked a scoreless innings in picking up his fifth save preserving the 4-1 win.

The SeaWolves are now 25-12 following the all-star break and their record in series following the break is 8-2-1.
