MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - Springfield, Missouri - The Travs rallied from five runs behind in the eighth inning and scored three in the ninth to tie Sunday night's game, but Springfield third baseman Brett Wallace's ninth-inning dinger gave the Cardinals a 6-5 victory. Wallace hit two home runs (3) to knock in the last two Springfield runs, and took Travs righty Rafael Rodriguez (2-4) deep to keep the Cardinals tied in the North Division race with Northwest Arkansas.Travs starting pitcher Amalio Diaz held the Cards without a run in the first two innings by getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the first then striking out the side in the second. The first four batters of the third inning reached base however with Daryl Jones knocking in Jim Rapaport, who had doubled. Donovan Solano singled home Jones for a 2-0 lead. When Diaz knocked down Wallace's hard liner then babied his throw to third attempting to force Daniel Descalso. The ball bounced away for an error then Desalso scored on Mark Shorey's sacrifice fly for a 3-0 Springfield lead.
Jones powered a 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall for a solo home run in the fourth inning pushing the Cards to a 4-0 lead. Wallace hammered the first pitch Diaz threw in the fifth inning for a long home run to right for a 5-0 Cards edge.
Held without a run over the first seven innings by Cards starter Brad Furnish and Josh Kinney, Morrissey homered off left-hander Zack Zuercher to begin the eighth inning. Jordan Czarniecki worked a two-out walk and righty Luis Perdomo was summoned from the pen. Ryan Leahy stroked a single to move Czarniecki to second base and Brian Stavisky's single drove him in bringing the tying run to the plate. Perdomo struck out Ben Johnson to end the inning.
Springfield closer Fernando Salas came on to work the ninth inning and was greeted by a booming double off Mark Trumbo's bat. After retiring the next two batters, Salas allowed a bloop RBI single by Nate Sutton to drive Trumbo home. Coby Smith shot a liner off the top of the left field wall for an RBI double and scored the tying run when Czarniecki singled to left field. Marco Gonzalez relieved and walked Stavisky to load the bases but got Johnson to fly out to keep the game tied.
Rodriguez had pitched a perfect eighth inning and retired the first batter of the ninth before allowing Wallace's game-ending long ball, the first run he's allowed this month.
Time of game was 2:54 and the paid attendance was 7,351.
