Great Lakes Loons Defeat South Bend Silver Hawks 6-5

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -In a night that saw a little bit of everything, the Great Lakes Loons beat the South Bend Silver Hawks in a fog-drenched Dow Diamond in front of 5,245 fans on Saturday night by a score of 6-5 in 11 innings.

The game lasted three hours and 59 minutes plus an hour and 21 minute rain delay to start the ballgame.

Mother Nature showed off a number of her features in the ballgame. At one point in the evening, Dow Diamond featured a half-cloudy, half-sunny rain shower, coupled with lightning and a rainbow spreading from left field to right field. A yellow sky was also spotted to the east behind the ballpark, and the fog dominated the game’s final inning.

The Loons put together a 4-0 lead heading into the seventh inning, only to see the Silver Hawks come back and take a 5-4 lead thanks to Taylor Harbin’s two-run double and a pair of bases loaded walks by Loons’ reliever Blake Brannon.

Brannon was ejected after the second bases-loaded walk by home plate umpire Tom Honec for arguing balls and strikes.

In the bottom half of the seventh, the Loons tied it up at five on an Eduardo Perez solo home run, which eventually sent the ballgame into extra innings.

In the 11th, the Loons loaded the bases on a first-pitch leadoff double by Brandon Taylor, followed by an infield bunt single by Alfredo Silverio and an intentional walk to Erik Kanaby. Then as a white-out overcame the Dow Diamond playing surface, Jovanny Rosario lined a game-winning, RBI single to left-center to give the Loons a 6-5 victory.

Once the winning run crossed the plate, South Bend pitcher Billy Spottiswood argued with base umpire Ben Karis, likely regarding Silverio’s infield hit, and needed to be restrained before leaving the playing field. Spottiswood got the loss to fall to 4-5 on the year while Loons reliever Bob Zimmermann recorded his first victory in a Loons uniform to improve to 1-3.

Together, Loons starter Josh Lindblom and Zimmermann threw a combined 9 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball as Lindblom went five no-hit innings to start the game and Zimmermann pitched 4 1/3 innings without allowing a hit. South Bend did not record its first hit until the sixth inning, when catcher Sean Coughlin lined an opposite-field single break up the potential no-hitter.

The Loons outhit the Silver Hawks 15-3 in the contest.
