Trenton Thunder Double Up the Reading Phillies 8-4

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – (Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Starting pitcher George Kontos tossed six sharp innings to lead the Thunder past Reading 8-4 on Sunday afternoon from Waterfront Park. Trenton has now won nine of its last ten games, and finished the season-series 13-3 against Reading.

 

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Trenton (82-51) scored two runs to take the lead off of Reading Starting pitcher Edgar Garcia (0-7). With the bases loaded and one out, Third baseman Chris Malec walked to force in a run to make it 1-1. Trenton took the lead on an RBI ground out by Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez. The lead increased to 3-1 in the third inning, on a sacrifice fly RBI by Gonzalez. The Thunder tacked on two runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 5-1. Both runs scored on an error by Reading Right fielder Jeremy Slayden. With the score 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Trenton plated three runs to put the game away. Shortstop Ramiro Pena, Left fielder Kevin Russo and Malec each had RBI singles in the inning. Russo finished the game 2 x 3 with two runs and an RBI. Malec went 2 x 4 with two RBI.


Kontos (6-11) scattered six hits and two runs for the win. He struck out six and walked one. Kontos has won three of his last four starts. Garcia gave up seven hits and five runs (three earned) in five innings of work to take the loss. Trenton had several offensive standouts in the win. Second baseman Reegie Corona had three hits, and scored two runs in the win. Pena also had two hits, scored two runs, and contributed an RBI.

Trenton has an off day on Monday, but will be back in action on Tuesday night against the Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The first game of the three-game series in Bowie, MD is set to start at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jason Jones (13-5, 2.79) will start for Trenton against Bowie RHP Chris Tillman (9-4, 3.32).
