MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - Carlos Santana put up some ridiculous statistics while playing for
the Inland Empire 66ers in 2008.
While in San Bernardino, his numbers were so amazing that Cal League
Managers took notice and voted him the 2008 California League MVP on
Monday.
Fans can only wonder what his number would have finished at,
however, on July 25th he was traded to the Cleveland Indians
organization in a deal that sent Casey Blake to the Los Angeles
Dodgers.
Santana had a breakout season for the Dodgers' Class "A" advanced
affiliate. The catcher hit .323 with 34 doubles, four triples, 14
home runs and collected 96 runs batted in for the 66ers. The switch-
hitter had a .341 batting average against left-handed pitchers. He
hit .411 with runners in scoring position and .500 with the bases
loaded. Santana reached base safely in 91 of his 99 games and had
more walks than strikeouts (69:59).
He played in the California League-Carolina League All Star Game in
June and made the Post-Season All Star Team at the catcher position,
also, on Monday.
Santana hit in 27 of his last 31 games with Inland Empire. He
collected 45 hits during that time period and had a .398 batting
average.
Santana still has a chance to win the batting title, too. He
finished with a .323 average and had enough plate appearances to
qualify for the crown. Daniel Nava of Lancaster has a higher batting
average (.337), but is on the disabled list and would not qualify if
the season ended today. Currently, San Bernardino has had four
batters win the batting title.
Santana still leads the league in on-base percentage (.431) and is
in the top five in slugging percentage (.563) and runs scored (88).
Since joining Kinston, Cleveland's advanced "A" affiliate; he is
batting .333 in 24 games
