Melissa Martinez | Comments Off | Connecticut Defenders Skid Continues with 5-3 Loss to the Reading Phillies - Eastern League
Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at 11:29AM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – READING, PA- When it rains it pours is a classic metaphor but
for the Defenders it is a reality. Connecticut dropped its season high
seventh straight to Reading 5-3 in a long drawn out 3 hours and 12
minutes.
The R-Phils carried over what worked for them
yesterday in their comeback victory as they took an early lead in the
first as Mike Spidale scored on a Greg Golson fielder’s choice.
Reading grew their lead in the third with a Luke Appert two run homerun on the first pitch he saw from Dave McKae. Greg Golson would draw a walk and quickly got to show off his speed as McKae threw wide of Witter at first and Golson was off. Witter then proceeded to throw the ball over Dave Maroul’s head at third which allowed Golson to score the R-Phils fourth run of the game and give them a comfortable 4-0 advantage.
Olmo Rosario got Connecticut on the board with a solo shot over the left field wall in the fourth, 4-1 Reading.
The
Defender split the lead in half as Kyle Haines and Richardson both
walked in the fifth, Rosario grounded out to short moving the runners
into scoring position, than Haines scored on a wild pitch, 4-2 R-Phils.
The R-Phils grew the lead back up to three when Joey
Hammond delivered a run scoring double to plate Sellers who got hit by
a pitch and Reading lead 5-2.
Connecticut scored a lone
run in the sixth with a Mike Mooney’s bloop base hit to right scoring
Martinez-Esteve who walked earlier. Defenders trailed 5-3.
Both
teams used a combination of eight pitchers but it was Reading
outlasting the Defenders as they took a two game advantage in the best
of four series.
