WOODBRIDGE, Va.— Getaway day for the Winston-Salem Warthogs should meanmore like get a win. That is exactly what the Hogs did Sunday night at
Pfitzner Stadium as they shutout the Nationals 5-0 to earn a series split.
John Ely was on top of his game from the start blanking Potomac after they
scored eight runs in last night's affair. The right-hander was fantastic
over six innings not allowing a run on four hits while notching five
strikeouts. The P-Nats put men on base in five of his six frames but just
two runners reached scoring position and the clutch hit never came. Ely
(6-11) had been 0-2 versus Potomac this season, but claimed his sixth win
of the season.
With Ely doing his job on the mound, his offense produced runs. C.J.
Retherford gave the Hogs a quick 2-0 advantage in the top of the first
inning with a two-run double off of Ross Detwiler. Although unknown at the
time, Retherford's knock would be the eventual game winner.
After the rough first inning, Detwiler settled down over the next three.
The left-hander put three zeros on the scoreboard until he was tagged with
another run in the fifth. Retherford again came through with a hit, this
time a two-out RBI single that made the score 3-0. Detwiler (6-8) pitched
six innings while allowing three runs on six hits but dropped his third
decision in four games.
Winston-Salem added two unearned runs later in the game with Jack Spradlin
on the hill. A throwing error in the top of the seventh by Darryl Lawhorn
led to a run and an RBI single in the eighth by Freddie Thon capped the
scoring for the 5-0 final.
Ricky Brooks and Henry Mabee tossed three scoreless innings of relief
keeping the Nationals offense silent. Potomac put two runners on in the
ninth, but never mounted a serious threat.
Potomac will travel to Lynchburg tomorrow to begin a seven-game road trip
with three games against the Hillcats and four against Winston-Salem.
Hassan Pena (0-1, 5.06) is slated to start for the P-Nats on Monday at
Falwell Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
