Fort Wayne Wizards Need 11 Innings to Take Care of Dayton Dragons, 2-1

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com –Dayton, Ohio—Brad Chalk’s one-out single brought in pinch-runner Robert Perry from third base to break a 1-1 tie in the top of the 11th inning as the Fort Wayne Wizards edged the Dayton Dragons 2-1 on Wednesday night.  The Wizards pulled to within five games of the Dragons in the wildcard race in the Midwest League’s Eastern Division with the win with 25 games to play.

Fort Wayne took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning and held the lead until the Dragons tied the game in the eighth.  Dayton’s Neftali Soto doubled down the right field line with two outs to bring in Zack Cozart from first to make it a 1-1 game.  The Dragons had a chance to take the lead when Brandon Waring was hit by a pitch after Soto’s double and Denis Phipps walked to load the bases.  But Devin Mesoraco struck out to end the inning.

The Dragons had a chance to win the game in the 10th inning when Jake Kahaulelio singled to start the frame and went to second on Cozart’s ground out.  But Soto flied to center and Waring grounded to third to end the inning.

In the top of the 11th, Dragons reliever Jeff Jeffords (3-4) walked the lead-off hitter, Luis Martinez.  A sacrifice bunt by Luis Durango moved Martinez to second.  Perry entered the game to run for Martinez and advanced to third on a passed ball.  With the infield pulled in, Chalk hit a hard grounder just beyond the reach of the second baseman, Kahaulelio, to bring in Perry and give Fort Wayne a 2-1 lead.

The Dragons were retired in order in the bottom of the 11th.

The Dragons fell to 26-19 in the second half with the loss.  They host Fort Wayne in the third game of the series on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.  Daniel Guerrero (0-3, 8.89) will pitch for Dayton.

Notes:  Dragons catcher Jason Bour left the game in the bottom of the seventh inning after being hit on the elbow by a pitch.  The extent of the injury was not immediately known.
