All the elements of the game came together once again for the JetHawks
against the Bakersfield Blaze. They pounded out 17 hits, got very
strong pitching, and did not commit an error as the finished off a
three-game sweep of the Blaze with a 5-2 victory Thursday night. The
JetHawks clinched a win in the season series against the Blaze for the
fourth straight year. Their magic number to clinch the #1 seed in the
Southern Division is now 18.
Pitching held the Blaze in check most of the game. Starter Derrick Loop was strong in his second start for Lancaster. The left-hander matched his career high with six strikeouts and allowed only two runs through five innings. Reliever Kyle Fernandes came in and dominated the Blaze over the final four innings. The left-hander shattered his career high for strikeouts with eight, surrendering only two hits. Fernandes earned the second save of his career.
The
offense did their part in staking the pitchers to the lead. The
JetHawks strung together five straight hits to open the third inning,
including RBI singles by Jason Place, Daniel Nava, and Jon Still to go
ahead. Yamaico Navarro and Nava had run-scoring singles in the fourth
inning to pad the advantage.
Navarro continued his tear with three hits. The JetHawks shortstop has matched the longest Lancaster hit streak of the year with 16 straight and now has 17 hits in his last 27 at bats. Daniel Nava added three hits and two RBI while Place, Still, Aaron Reza, and Kris Negron each had two hits.
