STATE COLLEGE, PA—The Spikes sent 4,835 fans home very happy on “We Win,You Win” Night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, winning a history-making
slugfest, 14-10, over the Williamsport Crosscutters.
As a result of the State College (11-36) win, all 4,835 in attendance get
the chance to use their ticket stubs for a $1 Field Box, Bullpen Box or
Outfield Bleacher ticket to one of the three games the Spikes play against
the Staten Island Yankees August 12th, 13th, or 14th. All three games will
have a 7:05 start.
The Spikes made history as well, banging out a team record 20 hits in the
win. Ciro Rosero led the offense with a Spikes record five hits in one
game. Rosero also ended with two runs batted in, a double and two stolen
bases.
Chase d’Arnaud came close to a record as well, going 4-for-6. The Spikes
shortstop collected hits in each of his first four at-bats, but was thrown
out by a half-step on a groundout in the sixth, then grounded into a
double play in the eighth. D’Arnaud finished with two doubles, two runs
batted in and two runs scored.
The Spikes also got home runs from Calvin Anderson in the first inning and
Andy Vasquez in the third. Each homer was a two-run shot to right center
field, nearly on the same line.
Williamsport (25-23) saw their ace right-hander, Robert Roth (7-2), rocked
for eight runs on eight hits in the first three innings. Roth’s ERA
increased over a full point from 2.28 to 3.39 in the game. The righty also
walked one in the start.
Mike Williams (1-0) got the win in relief for the Spikes with 2.1 quality
innings, allowing only one hit while striking out two.
Williams entered the game in the sixth inning, when a four-run Crosscutter
rally drew Williamsport within two runs, 10-8. But the left-hander retired
Troy Hanzawa with a flyout and shut down the Crosscutter bats to allow the
Spikes more breathing room in the late innings.
Arlon Quiroz ended with three hits, including a two-run triple, for the
Crosscutters, who collected 15 hits of their own in the game.
The Spikes took two of three from the Crosscutters in the series for their
first series win since taking two of three from the Vermont Lake Monsters
in early July.
With the win, the Spikes head to Maryland, where they will the Aberdeen
Ironbirds for the first game of a three-game series Saturday at 7:05. The
Spikes are likely to send right-hander Maurice Bankston (0-5) to the hill
to meet Aberdeen right-hander Pat Egan (1-5).
