Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at 09:54AM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - Andrew Lambo of Jacksonville Suns named Southern League Hitter of the Week.
ANDREW LAMBO, OF, JACKSONVILLE SUNS
Lambo proved worthy of a late-season promotion, producing a .750 slugging percentage while hitting safely in each of his first eight games with the Suns. Two weeks removed from his 20th birthday, Lambo capped a five-run fifth inning with an RBI single in his Double-A debut at Birmingham on August 25. He then scored the tying run in the ninth inning, and Jacksonville completed a 9-8 victory with a run in the 10th. The next night, Lambo made his first Double-A homer a game-winner as his three-run blast in the eighth inning turned a one-run deficit into the Suns’ margin of victory in a 6-4 triumph. After producing an RBI single in the series finale against the Barons on Wednesday, Lambo delivered a three-run double and a three-run homer as the Suns extended their winning streak to seven games with Thursday’s 10-3 victory at Montgomery. The native of Newbury Park, CA went 4-for-4 with a homer on Friday and added a double and a triple in a 9-6 triumph the next day. Prior to his promotion, Lambo hit .288 with 15 homers and 79 RBI for Great Lakes of the Midwest League.
Pitcher of the Week
JACOBO MEQUE, LHP, JACKSONVILLE SUNS
Meque recorded his first two wins at Double A amid Jacksonville’s season-high, seven-game winning streak. The 24-year-old Meque entered with the Suns trailing the Barons by three runs in the ninth inning on August 25 and struck out the side. After Jacksonville rallied for three runs in the bottom of the frame, Meque struck out two more batters in a scoreless 10th and emerged the winner when the Suns scored in their half of the inning. Meque’s entry again triggered success three days later at Montgomery. With the Suns down by a run in the seventh inning, the native of the Dominican Republic worked two scoreless frames capped by a strikeout. By the time he was replaced on the mound, Jacksonville had scored nine times en route to a 10-3 triumph.
