Mike Gosse Walks In the Winning Run for the Oneonta Tigers in Defeat of the Vermont Lake Monsters, 2-1

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – ONEONTA, NY --- Mike Gosse walked with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 13th inning to force home Hayden Parrott with the winning run as the Oneonta Tigers beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 2-1 in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at Damaschke Field.

The run came off Vermont infielder Yuerys Tejeda, who came on to pitch for the Lake Monsters in the 12th inning.  Tejeda is the first Vermont position player to be the losing pitcher in a game since Ryan Ellis on July 21, 2000 when Ellis allowed five runs (including a grand slam) in the top of the 10th inning of an 11-6 loss to Williamsport. The Lake Monsters won a game earlier this season against a position player when Vermont beat Lowell 6-5 in 18 innings at Centennial Field on July 28th.

The Tigers appeared to have won the game in the bottom of the 12th inning when Carlos Ramirez singled to center field with two outs and the bases loaded, but Billy Nowlin who was on first base did not run down and touch second. Center fielder Marcus Jones threw the ball into the infield and Jake Smolinsksi tagged second base for the force out to end the inning.

Vermont took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when Jake Dugger led off with a triple and scored one out later on a Chris Solis RBI single. The Tigers were able to tie the game in the sixth as Billy Nowlin doubled with two outs and scored on a Ramirez RBI single to center.

Lake Monsters starter Will Atwood allowed three hits with two walks and five strikeouts over four innings in his final start of the season, while Patrick Arnold allowed one run on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts in six innings of relief. Tejeda allowed the one run on two hits with three walks in his 1 2/3 innings.

Parrott was 4-for-5 with a walk and the game-ending run for the Tigers, who beat Vermont for the first time in five games at Oneonta this season. Santo Mieses pitched one scoreless inning for the win as five Tiger pitchers combined to allow just six hits in the game and just two hits over the final eight innings.

The Lake Monsters will add two pitchers from the Gulf Coast League Nationals on Wednesday as left-handers Jack McGeary and Graham Hicks will join Vermont for the final four games of the season. McGeary, who pitched in two games for Vermont at the end of 2007 season, was taken in the 6th-round of the 2007 draft and Hicks was selected in the fourth-round of the 2008 draft. The 18-year-old Hicks will be the first-ever Lake Monsters player born in the 1990's.

The loss dropped Vermont's record to 31-40 overall, while the Lake Monsters finish the season by going 0-7 in the final game of their seven roadtrips. Vermont returns home for the final four games of the 2008 season, beginning on Wednesday night against the Tri-City ValleyCats at 7:05 pm.
