David Adams is the Hero in Charleston RiverDogs 6-1 Win Over the Savannah Sand Gnats

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-CHARLESTON, SC – David Adams drove home two runs, recorded two hits and stole a pair of bases to lead the Charleston RiverDogs past the Savannah Sand Gnats, 6-1, in South Atlantic League action Monday in front of 4,831 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs’ bullpen continued its solid work as they have now thrown 14 consecutive scoreless innings, yet the hosts took advantage of four Savannah errors.

With the victory, the RiverDogs sweep the three-game series and improve to 11-7 overall and 7-2 at home while the Sand Gnats slip to 10-8.

Savannah seized a quick 1-0 advantage in the top of the first when 17-year old shortstop Wilmer Flores drew a two-out walk. After a balk by Charleston starter Manny Banuelos advanced Flores to second, Eric Campbell sliced a RBI single to right that plated Flores for the game’s first run.

The RiverDogs responded and knotted the game 1-1 when Ray Kruml singled, stole second and third base, and then dashed home when Sand Gnats catcher Kai Gronauer’s throw sailed into left field.

Charleston took a 2-1 advantage when Taylor Grote cracked a one-out single up the middle and reached third after a botched pickoff attempt by Savannah starter Jeurys Familia(2-1), who lost for the first time. Chase Weems followed with an RBI single to plate Grote.

The RiverDogs tallied another run in its third consecutive frame and led 3-1 when Adams doubled, stole third and scored on a throwing error, the Sand Gnats’ second of four.

The hosts put the game out of reach in the bottom of the seventh inning as they scored three runs to increase the lead to 6-1. Weems tripled, and after consecutive walks to Carmen Angelini and Kruml to load the bags, Adams singled home a pair of runs. Brian Baisley followed with a sacrifice fly to center to conclude the RiverDogs’ scoring.

Adams and Weems each had two hits to pace the RiverDogs’ eight-hit attack while Savannah, which collected seven knocks, were led by Josh Satin and Juan Lagares, who each had a pair.

While Banuelos went only four innings and had a no-decision, he surrendered one run on five hits while striking out four and walking two. Dan Kapala (2-0) earned the win as he pitched two frames and fanned one while Cory Arbiso and Casey Erickson combined to pitch the final three innings and allowed two hits while striking out four. For the game, the RiverDogs’ pitching staff fanned nine.

Charleston’s effective bullpen pitched 12.1 innings of scoreless ball during the three-game sweep. Further, the RiverDogs stole four bases on the night, a season-high.

The RiverDogs begin a four-game block against the Asheville Tourists beginning Tuesday night. Charleston manager Torre Tyson has announced that righty David Phelps (2-0, 2.30 ERA) will get the mound start while Asheville counters with righty Robinson Fabian (1-0, 5.28 ERA).
