West Virginia Power Salvage Doubleheader Split With Hagerstown Suns

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -Hagerstown, MD (May 10, 2009) – The Power offense scored 13 runs on 22 hits during Sunday’s double header against the Hagerstown Suns. The Suns rallied and overcame two deficits to take the first game 5-4 but the Power answered with a 9-7 victory in game two to earn the double header split.

The Power took the lead early in game one. Quincy Latimore and Greg Picart ripped two-out run scoring singles in the top of the second to give West Virginia an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. Steve Lombardozzi gave the Suns the lead in the fifth on a three-run homer, his first of the year. Jeremy Farrell tied the game during the next half inning, as he led off the sixth inning with a solo shot, his first of the season. Latimore gave the Power the lead again in the seventh with his first homerun of the season. Tyler Moore stepped in with the bases loaded and two-out in the seventh inning for the Suns and ripped Ryan Kelly’s 3-2 pitch into left field, scoring Lombardozzi and Robby Jacobsen to win the game.

West Virginia struck for three runs in the first inning of game two. Latimore’s first of three hits was an RBI double to bring in the first run of the inning before Calvin Anderson doubled in the last two. The Power pulled away with a five run third inning. The first six batters of the inning hit safely. Latimore drove in the first run with a triple and run scoring base hits from Chase D’Arnaud, Bobby Spain and Anderson followed. Josue Peley brought in the final run on a groundout.

The Suns rallied, but came up a few runs short. They made it a four run game in the third inning after Derek Norris hit a Grand Slam. Steven Souza scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning and Nick Arata ripped an RBI double to bring the Suns within two. The Power scored their final run with two outs in the sixth. Adenson Chourio was on second when Quincy Latimore hit a pop up that was dropped by the shortstop Arata, allowing Chourio to score. Lombardozzi scored the game’s final run on a passed ball in the seventh.

In game one, Osvaldo Rodgriguez (1-2) earned the victory, allowing a run on two hits in his only inning of work. Ryan Kelly (0-1) surrendered a pair of runs on three hits over an inning and two-thirds and was tagged with the loss. Yoffri Martinez (1-3) tossed two-thirds of the fourth inning and didn’t allow a run to get the win in game two while Eddie Pena (4) got the save. Patrick Arnold (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs on nine hits in three innings.

West Virginia is 9-21 and the Suns are 12-15 after the split. Quincy Latimore had five hits in the double header and came a homerun away from hitting for the cycle in game two. Calvin Anderson also had five hits in the double dip. Robbie Grossman extended his on base streak to 17 games but his hitting streak came to an end at 10 games. Four Power players turned in multi-hit games in the first contest and seven out of the starting nine hit safely.

West Virginia will continue the five game series against the Hagerstown Suns at Municipal Stadium on Monday night. Right hander Maurice Bankston (1-2, 3.65) will start for West Virginia and the Suns will counter with left hander Jack McGeary (0-2, 5.47). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
