Round Rock Express Edge Fresno Grizzlies 6-5 - PCL
Friday, May 15, 2009 at 10:12AM FRESNO, CA – With two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning Clay Timpner drove the first pitch he saw from Round Rock reliever Chad Paronto over the right-field wall to give Fresno a 6-5 win, their eighth straight, and a share of first place in the PCL’s Pacific Southern Division.
The visiting Round Rock Express surged to an early 4-1 lead by putting single runs on the board in each of the first four innings against Grizzlies starter Ryan Sadowski, including a solo home run by Matt Kata in the 3rd. Sadowski ultimately allowed three earned runs, while striking out seven, in 4.0 innings of work.
Trailing by three, Fresno tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Adam Witter, pinch-hitting for Sadowski delivered an RBI-single, and Timpner followed with a double to score two runs and tie the game at 4-4. Round Rock regained the lead in the 7th on a solo home run by Marc Saccomanno, but Fresno evened the score on a Matt Downs RBI-single in the bottom half of the inning.
The score remained 5-5 until the bottom of the 11th. After Round Rock reliever Chad Paronto retired Eli Whiteside and Geno Espineli, Timpner hammered his first pitch off the Chukchansi Park manual scoreboard in right-center field for a walk-off home run, his second round-tripper of the year.
Espineli, who tossed 2.0 scoreless frames in relief, earned the win to even his record at 2-2 on the year. Alex Hinshaw, Osiris Matos, Ramon Ortiz, and Espineli combined to strike out seven and surrender just one run in 7.0 innings of relief. The two teams combined for 28 strikeouts in the extra-inning contest.
The win was Fresno’s eighth straight, their longest streak since 2007, and gave them a share of first-place in the PCL’s Pacific Southern division. The Grizzlies will look to extend the streak to nine when they send southpaw Steve Hammond to the mound in the series finale with Round Rock on Friday night at Chukchansi Park, and the visitors will counter with right-hander Yorman Bazardo.
