Cleveland Indians Take a Look at Their Farmhands for May 6, 2009

· For the third week in a row, the Kinston Indians claimed the Carolina League Batter of the Week as K-Tribe INF MATT McBRIDE took the honors for April 27-May 3. Kinston has now garnered five of the first six Carolina League Weekly Awards.

McBride’s week included hitting .464 (13-28), with two home runs, nine RBI, seven runs scored and a .700 slugging percentage. McBride is currently hitting .404 this season, the second best batting average in the Carolina League and riding a 17-game hit streak. It was McBride’s first award this year.

· RHP JAKE WESTBROOK threw a 40-pitch (2 sets of 20) bullpen session yesterday in Arizona.

· Yesterday’s Akron at Altoona game was postponed because of inclement weather. It will be made up on Akron’s next visit to Altoona, as the teams will play a doubleheader consisting of two seven-inning games on Saturday, June 6th.

News & Notes: INF MICHAEL AUBREY went 1-for-8 over the weekend and is now hitting .385 (25-65) for T-4th in the IL...INF JORDAN BROWN has gone 13-for-34 with 4 2B and 6 RBI over his last 10 games for a season average of .353 (24-68)...His average is tied for sixth in the league...INF ANDY MARTE has a nine-game hitting streak where he is 11-for-28 with 3HR and 10 RBI...RHP TOMO OHKA has started five games and is 2-1 with 3.03 ERA (29.2IP, 26H, 10 R/ER, 5BB, 14K)...RHP MATT HERGES has appeared in 10 games for a team high (1-2, 4S, 9.1IP, 11H, 4R)...LHP DAVID HUFF (4-0, 3.21, 28.0IP) is the only pitcher that has four wins and has thrown more than 18.0 innings...After three straight QS, LHP JEREMY SOWERS is 1-1 a 2.25 ERA (24.0IP/6ER), the T9th best in IL.

News & Notes: INF JOSH RODRIGUEZ is hitting .314 (16-51) with 15 BB and is the league leader with a .478OBP...CA CARLOS SANTANA leads the league with 18 BB, is tied for first with 6HR and his 19 RBI are third best...Ten of Santana’s 17 H are extra bases (4 2B & 6 HR)...RHP HECTOR RONDON is 4-0 (23.0IP, 19H, 3R/ER, 22K) and has lasted at least five innings in all four of his starts this year, holding opposing hitters to a .226 (19-84) average and having a 1.17 ERA (23.0IP/3ER), the fifth best mark in the Eastern League...LHP CHUCK LOFGREN is 1-0 w/a 1.29 ERA in 4 starts (21.0IP, 10H, 3ER, 10BB, 15K) and has limited Eastern League hitters to a .137 (10-73) average against...He is 7th in the EL in ERA (1.29)...RHP VINNIE PESTANO’s nine saves are the tied for best in the league (11G, 10.1IP, 8H, 3R/ER, 5BB, 8K).

Yesterday: Kinston lost a 10-9 affair to Salem in Virginia...3B LONNIE CHISENHALL went 4-for-5 with a grand slam and was a triple shy of the cycle...LHP RYAN MORRIS was chased from the game after 2.1IP, giving up six hits and nine earned runs while walking four and striking out three...Down 10-7 at the beginning of the ninth, 2B CORD PHELPS and Chisenhall led off the inning with back-to-back hits and were brought in by a SS ADAM DAVIS single...DH ROMAN PENA struck out to end the game.

News & Notes: INF NATE RECKNAGEL snapped a seven-game hitting streak but is still hitting .339 (21-58) after going 11-for-27 (7G) on the recent road trip...Out of his 16 games played, Nate has hit in 13 of them...OF ADAM WHITE is hitting .286 (16-for-56) in 20 games and has 10SB (T3rd in SAL)...INF KAREXON SANCHEZ has five HR, which is tied for second in the SAL and his 8SB are good for T6th in the league...RHP JOEY MAHALIC has given up four runs (2ER) in 18.0IP for an ERA of 1.00 and hasn’t allowed a run in his last two games (9.0IP on the road)...RHP SANTO FRIAS has appeared in 7G (11.1IP) and allowed hits in only three of those and runs in only two...Frias has struck out 18 in his last 10.1IP.
