MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Chattanooga and Jacksonville played a good ole fashioned double header on Thursday night at AT&T Field. The Suns took the first game, 6-3, while the Lookouts used some late-inning heroics to come away with a 5-4 victory in the second contest of the evening.
After a nondescript first inning, Jacksonville entered the scoreboard in the second. Singles by Andrew Jenkins and Lorenzo Scott set-up a two-RBI double from Brad Davis, giving the Suns an early 2-0 lead.
Jacksonville added two more runs in the third on a Lee Mitchell two-run shot over the center field wall.
The bats kept swinging and not missing for the Suns in the fourth. Chris De La Cruz began the inning with a double. Lorezo Scott followed with a walk. Lookouts catcher Lucas May then made an errant throw on a pickoff attempt to score De La Cruz, while advancing Scott to second. Scott would eventually score on a Scott Singles single to right.
The Lookouts finally entered the scoreboard in the bottom portion of the fourth frame. Josh Bell set the table with a single and advanced to second on a Gaby Martinez walk. After a Russ Mitchell fly out, Lucas May atoned for his throwing error by nailing an RBI single to center. James Tomlin then ripped a double to score both runners. Jacksonville starting pitcher Sean West would settle down to induce two grounds outs, thwarting the possibility of additional runs. West (3-2), who threw five innings, picked up the win for the Suns on the evening.
Suns reliever Kasey Olenberger would pitch the final two frames to preserve the Jacksonville 6-3 lead.
Tim Corcoran (0-2) took the loss for the Lookouts. In four innings, he yielded six runs on seven hits and two walks.
The Lookouts turned the tables on the Suns by taking a front-loaded scoring approach in the second game of the doubleheader.
Justin Sellers led off the first with a double for the Lookouts. After two groundouts, Jamie Hoffman ripped a double to left to give the Lookouts an early 1-0 lead.
Chattanooga augmented their lead in the third with two more runs. Justin Sellers reached first by means of a walk to begin the inning and promptly stole second to put himself into scoring position. After two strikeouts, Jamie Hoffman tripled to plate Sellers. Josh Bell followed with a single to center to put the score at 3-0.
Meanwhile, Lookouts starting pitcher Josh Lindblom took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but his success would be matched with troubles in this weighty inning. Andrew Jenkins collected the Suns' first hit to lead off the fifth. After a Lorezo Scott single, Tim Torres hit a double to score both of the runners. Lindblom appeared to settle down by retiring the next two batters, but a Scott Cousins blast over the right field wall quickly changed the complexion of the game.
The Jacksonville lead would prove to be nothing more than ephemeral, as the Lookouts scored in the bottom portion of the fifth to knot-up the score, 4-4. Justin Sellers, once again, led off for the Lookouts and reached base with a single. Juan Gonzalez followed with a single to advance Sellers to second. A wild pitch by Suns relief pitcher Chris Leroux (1-2) resulted in both runners advancing a base. The wild pitch would prove to be detrimental, as a Jamie Hoffmann ground out to shortstop Tim Torres resulted in Sellers crossing the plate and tying up the score, 4-4.
A wild pitch would, once again, prove to be the Suns' downfall. The bottom of the sixth seemed like an innocuous one after the Suns quickly recorded two outs, but a J.D. Closser double shifted the momentum to the Lookouts. After walks to Gaby Martinez and Justin Sellers, relief pitcher Carlos Vasquez threw a wild pitch to score Closser. This costly pitch proved to be a game-changing one, as this would be the final run of the game, giving the Lookouts a 5-4 win.
Travis Chick (2-0) earned the win by pitching a scoreless sixth inning in relief.
Francisco Felix collected his first save of the season by recording the final three outs of the game.
Chattanooga will continue with their five-game homestand against the Jacksonville Suns at 7:15 A.M., tomorrow.
