Cleveland Indians Farm Report

Cleveland - Here are news and notes from around the farm teams of the Cleveland Indians:

 

CLUB NOTES & AWARDS

·   LHP SCOTT LEWIS made his first rehab start in Lake County’s 3-2 win last night…Lewis went three perfect innings, striking out three but did not get a decision.

·   RHP JAKE WESTBROOK’s attempt at his second rehab start for Akron was delayed by at least a day…Last night’s Akron vs. New Hampshire game was postponed due to inclement weather…Westbrook is scheduled to start tonight’s game vs. Portland at 7:05 pm.

·   INF LONNIE CHISENHALL, INF CORD PHELPS and LHP ERIC BERGER are Carolina League All-Stars and will head to the Golden State to take on the California League All-Stars on June 23rd.

Kinston infielder Lonnie Chisenhall will be the starting third baseman for the Carolina League All-Stars…California native and K-Tribe second baseman Cord Phelps will return to his home state as a utility infielder selection for the Carolina League All Stars…K-Tribe starting pitcher Eric Berger will return home for the All-Star game.

·   The South Atlantic League has announced their mid season All-Star teams and the Lake County Captains have two representatives on the Northern Division Team…RHP ALEXANDER PEREZ and second baseman KAREXON SANCHEZ have been chosen to represent the Captains at the All Star game in Charleston, WV on June 23.

COLUMBUS CLIPPERS (AAA)

West Division/International League                                    Streak: L1

Overall: 30-30 (.500) –2nd, 1.5 GB                                   Last 10: 5-5

Yesterday: The Clippers were stunned by Louisville, 6-1, in the series opener…The Bats jumped out to an early lead plating three in the first and another run in the second inning off of LHP CHUCK LOFGREN…Lofgren settled down and went

six innings, allowing four runs (3ER) on seven hits and struck out five…The lone Columbus run came in the second inning from a 3B ANDY MARTE solo HR, his sixth of the year…RHP MICHAEL GOSLING tossed two scoreless innings of one-hit ball while fanning three…Columbus left eight runners on base and were 0-for-4 with RISP.

News & Notes: INF ANDY CANNIZARO has raised his batting average from .149 to .235 (20-85) by going 13-for-38 over his last 10 games…Andy has hit safely in nine of those games with 4 2B/5RBI and is riding a five-game hitting streak…INF ANDY MARTE has the fifth highest IL average (.321, 50-156)…Since May 1 (37G), Marte has gone 44-for-134 (.328) with all 6 of his HR…INF MATT LaPORTA is 15-for-41 with 2HR and 8RBI over his last 10 games…OF MICHAEL BRANTLEY’s19SB on the year are tied for the most in the IL and his 41R are tied for third…RHP JACK CASSEL hasn’t allowed more than 3ER in 8 of his last 9 starts (4-3, 9GS, 49.0IP, 64H, 31ER, 22B, 23K)

Yesterday: Thursday’s game between the Aeros and the visiting New Hampshire Fisher Cats was rained out at Canal Park. Since this was the last time the Cats will visit Canal Park during the 2009 season, Akron and New Hampshire will make up this game as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday, June 17 in Manchester, NH.

News & Notes: OF JOHN DRENNEN has been red-hot of late after a promotion from A Kinston, hitting .368 (14-38) w/6 2B, 3B, 2HR, 16RBI and 7R over 10 games since re-joining Akron on June 1….He hit .191 (13-68) in his first stint with Akron up until May 11 and has raised his average from .191 to .255 (27-106)…CA CARLOS SANTANA leads the Eastern League with 6 sacrifice flies and walks (40), and is T3rd with 39R… INF BEAU MILLS stole his third career base in his 243rd career game on Wednesday…OF JOSE CONSTANZA leads the league with 21SB…RHP JAKE WESTBROOK went 3.0IP and allowed just one hit in his previous rehab start…RHP VINNIE PESTANO’s 15 saves are the most in the Eastern League…RHP STEVEN WRIGHT has held lefties to a .196 average (10-51).

KINSTON INDIANS (High-A)

Southern Division/Carolina League                                  Streak: W2

Yesterday: Kinston held a 1-0 lead through the first four innings in Thursday’s series finale with Myrtle Beach before storm clouds rolled in and suspended the game in the top of the fifth inning…The game will not be made up as both these teams do not face each other the rest of the first half…LHP RUSSELL YOUNG was cruising through the first four frames, allowing no runs on just three hits, one walk and striking out one…Kinston got its lone run on a third inning RBI single by 3B LONNIE CHISENHALL to drive home 1B NATE RECKNAGEL.

News & Notes: INF LONNIE CHISENHALL is 6th/CL batting .297 (65-219) with 10HR (T-2nd/CL), 14 2B, 3B, 44RBI (1st/CL), 36RS (5th/CL)…He leads the league in hits…INF CORD PHELPS has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games batting .305 (18-59) with 6 2B, HR, 9RBI, 5RS…He is also 2nd in the league with a .404OBP and T-2nd with 17 2B…INF ALEX CASTILLO has a four-game hitting streak batting .400 (6-15) with 2 2B, 2RBI, and 2RS…RHP PAOLO ESPINO has allowed 9ER in 36.1IP and possesses a 2.23ERA with opponents batting .180 against him…LHP ERIC BERGER is 4th in the league with a 2.37ERA and 5th/CL with 54 strikeouts in 60.2IP…RHP GARRISON CAMPFIELD is T-2nd/CL with 22 appearances and has only allowed 4ER in his last 16 games (22.2IP) with 32 strikeouts…The K-Tribe leads the league in reaching base on walks with 248, 25 more than the runner-up Salem Red-Sox.

Yesterday: The Captains were able to hang on despite the 9th inning rally by the Shorebirds, 3-2…DH ADAM ABRAHAM came through in the clutch for two doubles both coming with two outs and finished the night going 2-4 with 2 2B and 2RBI…LHP SCOTT LEWIS pitched three perfect innings on his 1st rehab assignment…RHP TREY HALEY followed yielding 5.0IP allowing a run while striking out four to earn his first professional win…3B WALTER DIAZ also helped out offensively going 2-3 with a RS and a BB.

News & Notes: In the last three games, INF ADAM ABRAHAM  has hit .456 (5-11) with 3 2B, 2HR, 5RBI and 3RS…OF DONNIE WEBB leads the league with 8 3B and 2nd/SAL with 21 SB…Backup CA MICHAEL VALDEZ has hit safely in the last seven games played batting .409 (9-22) with HR, 7RBI and 2RS…OF DELVI CID is batting .317 (33-104) with 3 2B, 2 3B, HR, 9RBI, 17RS in 26 games with the Captains…RHP MATTHEW LANGWELL has allowed only 3ER in the last 13 appearances (18.1IP)…RHP DAVID ROBERTS has not allowed a run in his last three outings yielding 7.0IP with six strikeouts…LHP T.J. HOUSE possesses a 3.18ERA striking out 47 batters in 56.2IP and has yielded 20ER…Opponents bat .226 against him this season.
