West Virginia Power Can't Overcome Slow Start In 9-3 Loss To Hickory Crawdads

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -Charleston, WV (June 13, 2009) – The Hickory Crawdads scored six times in the top of the first inning on Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park and used the big inning to catapult them to a 9-3 victory over the West Virginia Power.

The Crawdads used just a pair of hits in the big inning. Rafael De Los Santos threw four wild pitches, walked three batters and hit two, before being taken out after recording just one out. He faced seven batters. De Los Santos’s errant throw scored Cody Podraza, a wild pitch plated Jake Kaase and Mike Hollander brought in the next run on a sacrifice fly. Jared Bolden knocked in the next run on a single and Leury Garcia doubled in the final two runs of the inning.

West Virginia got their first run in the bottom of the first on Calvin Anderson’s two-out single which scored Chase D’Arnaud. In the second, the Crawdads committed their first of four errors on the night when Podraza dropped a fly ball in center field, which allowed Bobby Spain to reach second base. Spain scored later in the inning on Josue Peley’s groundout.

Lionel De Los Santos drove in Hickory’s seventh run on a sacrifice fly in the third inning and Matt West tattooed a two-run homer off Ramon Aguero in the sixth inning to plate Hickory’s final two runs of the game. The Power got their final run in the ninth inning when Danny Bomback doubled in Robbie Grossman.

Wilfredo Boscan (4-3) allowed a pair of runs, only one earned on three hits over five strong innings to earn the victory. De Los Santos (0-1) had a rough outing in his Power debut. He was charged with six runs on one hit over a third of an inning and took the loss. Five different West Virginia Power pitchers saw action in the game.

West Virginia fell to 24-38 after the loss, and the Crawdads improved to 29-31 after the win. Grossman turned in the only multi-hit game for West Virginia, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Marcus Davis walked in the sixth inning to extend his on base streak to seven games.

West Virginia will continue their nine game home stand and finish the four game series against the Hickory Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park on Sunday evening. The Power will start right hander Gabriel Alvarado (3-4, 4.78) and the Crawdads will counter with right hander Joe Wieland (1-0, 2.63). The first pitch will be delivered at 5:05 PM.
