Modesto Nuts Pound Stockton Ports 11-3 - Cal League

STOCKTON, Calif.—The Ports pitchers allowed three home runs in Tuesday's contest, and Stockton dropped their ninth game of the season at the hands of Modesto, 11-3, at Banner Island Ballpark.

Stockton (24-41) allowed 11 runs on 13 hits, and issued five walks.  The Ports offense was headed by Jemile Weeks, who finished the game 2x4 with a three-run home run, to extend his hitting streak to 17 games.  He has hit safely in each game he started with the Ports.  Modesto (37-28) held the Ports to just five hits over the game.

Mathieu LeBlanc Poirier worked just 3.1 innings and allowed six earned runs on five hits, including two home runs.  He picked up his third loss of the season.  Modesto starter Cory Riordan earned his third win of the season, tossing 7.1 innings and striking out seven.

Modesto got off to a quick 2-0 start in the first inning.  Poirier gave a up a leadoff single to designated hitter Charlie Blackmon, hit shortstop Radames Nazario and walked left fielder Jay Cox.  With the bases loaded and no out, Poirier hit Matt Repec to bring home a run.  Right fielder Brian Rike grounded into a double play, which allowed Nazario to score.  Then second baseman Jason Van Kooten grounded out to end the inning.

The Nuts added their third run of the game in the third inning as left fielder Jay Cox launched a solo home run to the Metro PCS Home Run Hill in right center field.

In the fourth frame, the Nuts pulled ahead, 6-0.  Van Kooten slammed a solo shot, his fourth of the season, over the mini monster wall in left field to lead off the inning.  Catcher Lars Davis singled and was followed on base by Jeff Cunningham, who walked.  Poirier was replaced by lefty Derrick Gordon, who gave up a two-RBI single to Blackmon.  Gordon then retired the next two batters to get out of the inning.

The Ports notched their first hit of the game with a single by Weeks, who was left stranded on base.  The Ports left five runners on base in the game.   Only four batters reached base after Weeks' home run, two on walks and two on hits.

Blackmon's RBI single in the sixth inning brought home Modesto's seventh run of the game.  The Ports responded by adding three of their own in the bottom half of the inning.  Weeks' fifth homer of the season, a three-run bomb, dropped into the Metro PCS Home Run Hill in right field.

Modesto added two runs in both the seventh and ninth innings, to pull ahead 11-3.  In the seventh inning, Cox walked to get things started.  At that point, the Ports brought in Nick Walters to pitch.  Walters gave up a single to Repec, and then struck out Rike.   Walters tried to pick off Repec at first, and over threw the ball.  The error allowed Cox to score and Repec to move to third. Van Kooten then singled to bring home the second run.   Walters induced two groundouts to end the inning.  Van Kooten hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning off Lance Sewell.  He finished the game 3x5 with four RBI.

The Ports will take on the Nuts for the final game of the series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Banner Island Ballpark.  RHP Tyson Ross (1-4, 4.260 will head to the mound for Stockton, to face off against RHP Connor Graham (3-3, 3.52) of the Nuts.
