MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -READING, Pa. – Phillies starter Tyson Brummett walked four batters in his five-plus innings of work Wednesday night against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. That proved decisive as three of the four scored on the way to a 4-3 victory.
Both starting pitchers lost the plate in the fourth inning, Brummett walking two straight to start the inning before Brian Jeroloman went yard to right for a 3-1 lead.
The Cats’ Marty McCleary gave up a solo homer to right by Kevin Mahar, then walked the bases full with two out, ending his night. Celson Polanco (1-1) came on to strike out Michael Taylor on a high 3-2 fastball.
Brummett (3-7), who had walked a total of nine batters in his previous eight starts, ran into control problems again in the sixth, walking the first two batters he faced. Darin Mastroianni followed with an RBI single, making it 4-2 and ending Brummett’s night. Jason Mackintosh came on to throw a couple of ground balls, one of them a 4-6-3 double play.
The Phillies (39-31) had their chances early against McLeary but stranded seven runners over the first four innings.
They cut the lead to a run in the seventh against tough right-handed side-armer Danny Farquhar, the run coming across on an RBI groundout by Neil Sellers.
The Cats (32-40), losers in 14 of their last 18 coming into the three-game series, won their second straight here to even the season series at 4-4.
