Kinston, NC (June 25, 2009) – Five different Red Sox had multiple hits AND multiple RBI as Salem clobbered Kinston 12-0 on Thursday evening at Grainger Stadium. Salem led 4-0 after six innings before exploding for eight more over the final three frames, and Indian batters were baffled by Eammon Portice, Kyle Fernandes, and Jason Rice over the course of the five-hit shutout.
                Portice scattered five hits and three walks over six scoreless innings, using two double play grounders and six strikeouts to help him wiggle out of danger. In lowering his ERA to 3.97, Portice improved to 5-3 as neither Fernandes nor Rice allowed a hit over the final three innings.
                Meanwhile, the Red Sox put runners on base in every single inning, with multiple baserunners in eight of the nine frames. Salem scored single runs in the first, second, fourth, and sixth, before exploding for five in the seventh to break it open. Kris Negron went 3-5 with two RBI and a season-high four runs scored, Jason Place was a homer short of the cycle in his 3-4 effort that included a pair of RBI, and Che-Hsuan Lin went 2-5 with 3 RBI from the leadoff spot. In addition, Mike Jones went 2-3 with three walks and 2 RBI, and Yamaico Navarro returned to Salem with a 2-6 night that included a pair of runs knocked in. Navarro last played for the Red Sox on opening day, but had since been sidelined with a wrist injury.
                 Red Sox newcomers were on base quite a bit, as Anthony Rizzo and David Mailman combined to draw five of the 11 walks issued by Kinston pitching. Rizzo went 1-4 while Mailman was 0-3, but each scored a run in their Red Sox debut.
                Kinston’s pitching staff was shaky from the start. Three double-plays turned in the first four innings prevented Ryan Morris from getting shelled, and he was able to minimize the damage during his five innings to just three runs on eight hits and five walks. Over the final four frames though, four Indian pitchers allowed nine runs on seven hits and six walks. The Red Sox batted around in the seventh, scoring five runs on three hits and three walks. Though Salem left 13 runners on base, they also went 7-17 with runners in scoring position in their biggest victory, margin-wise, of the season.
                The Sox and Tribe will reunite on Friday night with Seth Garrison opposing Paolo Espino. Gametime is set for 7:00.
