Jacksonville Suns Hurl Four-Hit Shutout in Win over the Carolina Mudcats
Sunday, June 28, 2009 at 12:46AM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-Zebulon, N.C. – Starter Nic Ungs and relievers Brad Stone and Jay Voss combinedfor a four-hit shutout while the offense added support early and often as the Jacksonville Suns (40-36, 5-1) picked up a 9-0 win over the Carolina Mudcats (38-37, 1-5) in front of 5,446 Saturday night at Five County Stadium.
Ungs (4-1) picked up his second win of the series, dealing six scoreless innings while scattering three hits and a walk. Mudcats starter Jordan Smith (4-3) fell in the loss after allowing three runs and eight hits over five innings of work.
Jacksonville opened the scoring in the top of the first inning two batters into the game as Lorenzo Scott singled home Bryan Petersen, who had led off with a triple, for a 1-0 lead. The Suns added two more runs in the second inning on back-to-back RBI singles from Nic Ungs and Bryan Petersen for a 3-0 score.
The Suns added two more runs in the sixth inning against Carolina reliever Ramon Geronimo, including an RBI double from Brad Davis and sacrifice fly from Scott for a 5-0 lead.
Jacksonville put an exclamation point on the score in the seventh inning, scoring four more runs. A Ryan Klosterman single, Scott Cousins double and Bryan Petersen groundout all plated runs while a passed ball allowed another run for a 9-0 score as all nine batters came to the plate.
