Chattanooga Lookouts Bring the Drama in 6-5 Edging of the Carolina Mudcats

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - In a game that initially had all the making of a pitchers' dual between the Lookouts and Carolina Mudcats, both teams' bats proved to be the weapon of choice in the latter portion of Sunday evening's match-up Down 5-2 in the eighth, the Lookouts rallied to score four runs to come away with a dramatic 6-5 win at AT&T Field.

Chattanooga scored two in the second. Andrew Lambo began the rally with a leadoff single and made is way to third on a subsequent Russ Mitchell double down the right field wall. Tommy Giles followed with a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Lambo. After a Gaby Gutierrez ground out, Justin Sellers hit a double to right, scoring Mitchell.

Lookouts starting pitcher J.D. Durbin, making his second start of the season for the Lookouts, cruised through the Mudcats' lineup until he hit some turbulence in the seventh inning. The former Major Leaguer walked Juan Francisco to begin the seventh and proceeded to give up a two-run homer to Todd Frazier, knotting the score up at 2-2. Durbin would settle down to retire the next three batters.

With Durbin out of the game, Jesus Rodriguez took over pitching duties for the Lookouts in the eighth and suffered a similar fate to Durbin in the prior inning. After walking Korey Feiner and inducing a ground out, Sean Henry blasted a two run shot over the left field wall to give the Mudcats a 4-2 lead. The next pitch to Michael Griffin was an inside fastball, which was deemed retaliatory by umpire Travis Brown, and Rodriguez was given the ole hee-ho. The bad luck continued with new pitcher Javy Guerra, who was greeted with a Michael Griffin double. A fielding error off of the glove of shortstop Justin Seller plated Griffin and gave the Mudcats a 5-2 edge.

The Lookouts came roaring back in the bottom portion of the eighth. Adam Godwin led off with a double and proceeded to third on a Ramon Nivar single. The speedy Nivar quickly swiped second to put both runners in scoring position. Eddy Perez popped out to shortstop to put the rally on pause, but back-to-back doubles by Lambo and Mitchell tied up the game, 5-5. With one out on the board and the go-ahead run on second, Giles anticlimactically popped out to first. Martinez, however, came through in the clutch by singling to right off of Sean Watson (1-4), bringing home Mitchell on a close play at home.

Guerra (1-0) retired the side in the ninth to earn his first win as a Lookout.
