Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 12:25PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-PORT CHARLOTTE – After a back-and-forth affair, the Daytona Cubs (23-25) put up a five-spot in ninth inning to comeback and beat the Charlotte Stone Crabs (26-24), 6-1.
The Cubs had plenty of opportunities to score, but could not scratch across a run. Daytona loaded the bases up in the first inning with only one out before Downs struck out Jovan Rosa and Dylan Johnston to end the threat. Johnston came up once again with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, but would suffer the same fate against the Stone Crabs starter. In all, both teams would combine to strand 23 runners in the game.
Charlotte broke up a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a single run off of Cubs reliever Steve Vento. Second baseman Cody Cipriano started off the frame with a double to the wall in left-center. He moved to third on a ground ball and would score on a very close play at home. Reid Fronk grounded a ball to shortstop Starlin Castro who came home with the baseball, but the throw was just off the mark and Cipriano slid in safely to give the Crabs a 1-0 lead.
